Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Curley.
Hi Dana, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hey, San Diego! I’m Dana Curley, registered dietitian nutritionist and founder of Dana Curley Nutrition.
First off, I am not the food police. I love talking to people about their health and collaborating on ways to improve it. I am a natural problem-solver and want you to come away from your first session with me feeling excited about making healthy changes in your life and knowing you can keep your beloved comfort foods. Cultural competency and compassion build the foundation of my work.
With my own nutrition counseling practice, I ensure that my patients get the personalized, evidence-based nutrition guidance they seek. While nutrition information so often seems overwhelming with so many voices in the space, it is important to simplify, and to personally tailor action steps for each individual patient. Nutrition goals are never one-size fits all.
I am focused on nurturing patient relationships, which can get lost with a bigger company, outsourcing, and provider turn-over. Establishing my own business allows me to practice medical nutrition therapy my way, with time allotted every week to reviewing the newest research and evaluating how it impacts the people I see.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course, starting a nutrition counseling practice is not all smooth-sailing. Our system of health insurance is complex – becoming in-network with the major insurance companies is like learning a new language, or actually several new languages. It is important to Dana Curley Nutrition that we are able to accept health insurance. Most people who have health insurance have some preventative nutrition coverage at 100%. I want to help my patients meet their health goals while keeping their out-of-pocket costs to a minimum.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work via telehealth which is a great way to meet my patients in their own kitchens! People love telehealth to literally meet them where they are. It is so easy for a patient to grab that protein powder from their counter and we can discuss the ingredients together.
I specialize in weight management, diabetes, GI conditions, autoimmune disorders, PCOS, hypertension, high cholesterol, and—most importantly—enjoying food again. focus on building healthy eating habits, and meeting patients where they are without judgment. What sets me apart from others is my willingness to rise to the challenge. I have seen patients with rare diseases, cognitive, and physical challenges and will strategize with them to create a plan.
What makes you happy?
I love when patients ask me if it is okay if they take notes! Um, I think everyone should take notes when I speak. All joking, aside, I am honored when people tell me they were thinking of what I said and how it made an impact on their life.
On a personal note, seeing the ocean every day fills me with joy. Living on the East Coast for most of my life, going to the beach was sometimes a once-a-year treat. Here in San Diego the ocean is in reach daily. I do not take it for granted.
