Today we’d like to introduce you to Dania Bank.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Dania, and I am one of the owners of Zoom Room Kearny Mesa, a cousin-owned business with my business partner, Isaac. I was born and raised in Mexico City, and at 24, after getting married, I moved to North Carolina to pursue an M.Ed in School Counseling. Due to my husband’s job, we later relocated to Dallas, where I faced an unexpected challenge—my counseling license wasn’t transferable to Texas. Unable to work as a school counselor, I saw an opportunity to follow a different passion and enrolled in a program at Triple Crown Academy, now known as Starmark Academy, to become a professional dog trainer and behavioral specialist.
During my time there, my Shorty Bulldog, Zoan, became my loyal companion and apprentice. Training alongside him, I realized I could turn my love for dogs into a career. After completing the program, I was fortunate to be hired as an assistant trainer at a dog training center in Dallas. This experience not only allowed me to teach people how to train their dogs but also gave me valuable insight into the retail and customer service aspects of the business.
After some time, we moved again—this time to California. I continued working as a dog trainer but had to step away for a few years due to the green card process. During that period, I became a mother, welcoming my daughter first and later two sons, the youngest born six years ago. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been able to stay home with my children until my youngest was old enough to start school.
When that moment came, I knew it was time to return to work, but I wanted to pursue something I was truly passionate about.
After extensive research, I came across Zoom Room. I remember sitting with Zoan by my side, reading about the company, and feeling an instant connection. Everything about Zoom Room—their philosophy, core values, and approach to training—aligned perfectly with my experience and beliefs.
I decided to take a leap and bring this vision to life. However, I knew I couldn’t do it alone—I needed a partner who shared my passion and drive. Around that time, Isaac was looking for a new business opportunity that would allow him to continue growing professionally after years in a managerial role.
It didn’t take long for me to think of him. Knowing his love for dogs, his enthusiasm for working with people, and how well our strengths complemented each other, I realized we’d make the perfect team. I introduced him to the idea of Zoom Room, and the more he thought about it, the more he saw its potential and felt it could be a great fit for him. Excited by the opportunity, he got on board, and by the summer of 2021, we made it official signing our agreement and becoming the proud owners of what is now Zoom Room Kearny Mesa.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This March, we’ll be celebrating our two-year anniversary—a milestone made possible by our incredible staff and loyal clients, many of whom have been with us since day one. Their support has been instrumental in our success. That said, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Starting a business from scratch with zero clients is never easy. In our first year, limited revenue meant we, as owners, had to work six—sometimes seven—days a week because we couldn’t yet afford a larger payroll. Personally, one of the biggest sacrifices has been time away from my family. With three young kids (ages 6, 8, and 11), missing out on weekend activities and skipping trips because I couldn’t take time off has been especially tough.
Another challenge is that our business operates seven days a week and cannot be run remotely. When a team member is out sick or on vacation, we have to ensure coverage. The key to managing this has been building a team of dedicated employees who are true team players—always willing to step up when needed. Their commitment has made all the difference
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Providing exceptional dog training classes using only positive reinforcement. Small group classes or private training sessions allow our expert dog trainers to teach obedience, dog agility, puppy training classes and enrichment workshops in our indoor climate-controlled dog gym.
What does success mean to you?
For me, success is finding purpose and joy in whatever you do. It means appreciating the learning opportunities that arise every day and maintaining a positive attitude, even in challenging moments. Ultimately, success comes from making a positive impact on others
