Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Angeles.
Daniel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Everything started when one of the homeboys showed up to school with a neck tattoo. I had never seen one in person as nobody in my family had ink in their bodies. So I asked where he got it and how soon can I got get myself one ..that same afternoon I sat on the chair in this guys room an hour later it was done, ANGELES on the middle of my back. I was hooked, that moment I made up my mind “this is what I want to do with my life “…Soon I was drawing on anything I could, inspired by all the Chicano art lifestyle.
The day after my high school graduation, I jumped in my dads truck and he dove me around town to every shop we can find. I heard lots of “not now “ “we don’t have space “ “come back later “. But none of that stopped me. One day finally I sat in the lobby of this shop in El Colon. After waiting for 8hrs the Owner finally came out, by then I had already drawn a few pieces of art I copied from the flash in the wall, he was impressed by this and came back with 2 drawings and told me to come back when I had 100 of each. I came back the next morning before he opened shop.
He then took me to another shop where the owner asked me when do I want to start. I said today, he then handed me the broom and mop and told me to get to work… Ever since I’ve worked at different shops till I came to sad tattoo and settle here
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Dentloktattoo – what should we know?
I’m a tattoo artist, I like to have a variety of art styles that I can create such as Japanese art, American traditional, new school, fine line Chicano black and grey, with all of this combined I like to say I specialize in the cover-up and fix up work. This means I fix other people’s mistakes, when every else said they couldn’t or wouldn’t, I say “let’s do it, show me what you would like to see on top of that and I figure out how to get rid of it.
A lot of I’ve met with messed up tattoos were ashamed and some opted to not wear a certain type of clothes or did anything they could to keep them covered, me being able to give them back that self-steam and confidence to take that shitty tattoo off their skin and give them something to be proud of. Given a piece of art they can show off to everyone that wants to look at it. I helped and they will forever remember me. It makes me happy and proud of my art.
If you had to start over, what would you have done differently?
Nothing! I wouldn’t be in the same place I am now, I like where I am at and everything that happens along the way has led me to this place and it makes it all worth it.
