Meet Daniel Gundert of North County Gymnastics & The Gyminny Kids

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Gundert.

Daniel Gundert

Daniel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in San Diego and found gymnastics at a young age. It became the one place where I felt confident, and grounded. I began coaching as a teenager and eventually found my way to Gyminny Kids in 2003, where I worked nearly every role imaginable over the course of two decades.

Behind the scenes, my early adulthood was marked by addiction, instability, and repeated setbacks. I experienced homelessness, financial hardship, and serious health consequences, and there were many moments when I didn’t believe I would survive, let alone succeed. Recovery became the turning point in my life. Through sobriety and a commitment to daily discipline, I began rebuilding my life one day at a time.

In 2015, I stepped into leadership at Gyminny Kids, and in late 2021, I became the sole owner of the company. What started as a single gym in 4S Ranch has grown into five locations across San Diego, serving over 6,000 students weekly, employing over 100 staff members, and brings in an eight-figure annual revenue. Gyminny Kids has since been recognized nationally, including being listed on the Inc.5000 for two consecutive years (2024 & 2025), but the achievement I’m most proud of is the culture, one built on character, service, second chances, and belief in people.

Today, I’m a husband, father of five, business owner, and best-selling author of Baby Gorilla, a memoir about turning pain into purpose. My mission is to lead with integrity, give back generously, and use both business and storytelling to remind others that no matter how far you fall, redemption is always possible.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. The greatest challenges in my life and career were internal before they were external. I spent years battling addiction, instability, and the consequences that came with them, broken trust, financial insecurity, and moments where starting over felt overwhelming. Recovery required rebuilding my life from the ground up, one day and one decision at a time, which was a true lesson in humility.

Professionally, stepping into leadership came with its own obstacles. Transitioning from employee to owner meant earning trust, navigating imposter syndrome, and learning how to lead people who had known me in very different chapters of my life. Growth also brought financial risk, as we expanded quickly and learned hard lessons about pacing, hiring, systems, and cash flow.

Like many businesses, we were also tested during COVID, which forced difficult decisions under extreme uncertainty. Through each challenge, I learned that resilience, and surrounding yourself with the right people matter more than talent alone. Those struggles ultimately shaped my leadership philosophy and reinforced my belief that hardship, when faced head-on, can become a powerful advantage.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
North County Gymnastics & The Gyminny Kids is a family-owned gymnastics organization serving children from 9 months old through elite competitive athletes across multiple locations in San Diego County. At our core, we believe gymnastics is more than a sport; it’s a foundation for confidence, discipline, emotional regulation, and character that carries into every area of life.

We are known for our early childhood and preschool programs, which have been called the “best gymnastics preschool program in the nation” by FIG President Steve Butcher. Children as young as 9 months begin developing coordination, body awareness, and social confidence in a safe, clean, climate-controlled environment. As kids grow, our recreational programs and competitive teams provide a clear pathway forward, supporting both recreational participants and high-level competitive athletes. Over the years, our competitive teams have produced hundreds of state and regional champions, multiple national qualifiers, and All-Star athletes, while still maintaining a fun-first, inclusive culture.

Gyminny Kids has a PHD in theming. GK delivers Bi-monthly themes designed to infuse fun and creative learning into each lesson plan. From Superheroes, Earth Week to Numbers and Shapes Week, Gyminny Kids uses every opportunity to teach life lessons alongside gymnastics. We prepare our students for success in and out of the gym, making learning a blast! Some gyms have strong preschool and recreational programs, while others have strong competitive team programs. We have the best of both, and that is what makes us unique and well-rounded.

We make giving back a huge part of our mission. At Gyminny Kids, giving back isn’t just something we do; it’s part of who we are. Our mission to build stronger, more confident children has expanded far beyond the gym walls into the communities that raised us. Since 1987, we’ve donated over $850,000 to children’s organizations, local schools, families, and community partners, and we’re just getting started.

We hosted our annual Coaches Cup fundraiser for several years, a hallmark “kids helping kids” event that has raised more than $100,000 for families and nonprofits like Rady Children’s Hospital. Through real estate commission donations, half of my commissions is donated to pediatric charities, including Rady Children’s and St. Jude’s Hospitals, contributing tens of thousands of dollars more to children in need.

For more than 35 years, we’ve supported local schools with direct contributions, event sponsorships, equipment, and staff volunteers, averaging $20,000 a year and often providing services at no cost. That includes career coaches running on-campus activities, DJ services for school events, mobile obstacle courses, free open gym passes, and certificates for camps and open gyms to raffle at school fundraisers.

What also sets us apart is our people and our systems. Behind the high-energy, creatively themed gyms is a professional organization built on long-term staff development, strong leadership training, and a “got your back” culture. Many of our coaches have been with us for decades (three current employees have been with us for over 30 years), and we invest heavily in mentorship, career growth, and benefits because we believe that supporting our employees builds great programs. That stability is something families feel the moment they walk in the door. We implemented EOS a few years back, a business operating system that helped us organize, systemize, and digitize our processes, making it much easier to open new locations and ensuring that there is an SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for every task and function.

Gyminny Kids is a family-owned and family-run business, and that perspective shapes everything we do. Our five children train in our gyms, our family is present daily, and we make decisions through the same lens as the parents we serve, because we are those parents. From safety standards and curriculum design to communication and culture, we constantly ask the same question every family asks: Would this be good enough for our own kids?

That lived experience creates a different level of care and accountability. We understand the trust it takes to hand your child to a coach, the importance of consistency, and the impact a positive environment has on a child’s confidence and development. Because we’re building something our own children are part of, we think long-term, about character, emotional well-being, and creating a place where kids feel safe, supported, and inspired to grow.

Being family-owned also allows us to stay values-driven rather than trend-driven. We’re not focused on quick wins or short-term growth; we’re focused on building a legacy business that serves families well, develops great coaches, and strengthens the communities we’re part of. That mindset is reflected in our longevity, our staff retention, and the relationships we’ve built with generations of families across San Diego.

As the owner, I oversee the organization’s vision, leadership development, and long-term direction. Having worked nearly every role in the business over more than two decades, my focus today is on building leaders, maintaining high standards, and ensuring the mission stays the priority: to raise well-rounded kids, support the community, and create a business rooted in integrity, service, and second chances.

Ultimately, what I want people to know is that Gyminny Kids isn’t just about creating great gymnasts; it’s about building well-rounded humans and proving that a values-driven organization can grow and make a meaningful impact on the San Diego community.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as alignment between who you are, how you live, and how you treat people when no one is watching. It’s waking up without regret, keeping promises to yourself, and being present for the people who matter most. It is how many people do you serve, and how well do you serve them?

Success isn’t only financial achievement or titles; it’s having children who want to spend time with you, building something that serves others, and creating a life where your work and your values don’t conflict. For me, it’s staying sober, leading with integrity, and turning pain into purpose.

At the end of the day, success is knowing that if all material possessions disappeared tomorrow, I’d still be proud of my legacy.
