Meet Daniela Becerra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniela Becerra.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in Mexico City, I grew up in a small city in Canada and since then, I’ve moved eighteen times in nine different cities. With so many moves, I’ve had to adapt to different environments, but I finally feel at home in SoCal where I reside to finish my studies at Pasadena City College and where I am pursuing my career as memory collector/photographer with the media production company Killed With Kindness.

I’ve had an inclination to photography since the age of ten, but I didn’t realize just how strong it was until I found myself paying more attention to the photographers than the artists at shows I attended on a weekly basis while living in the heart of LA. Going to music festivals and concerts became my favorite escape, especially as a fan of electronic music, but I didn’t just want to experience it as a fan anymore.

I became obsessed with the idea of following in the footsteps of “EDM photographer” Rukes who is still one of my inspirations and so I set out to find a way. Without having any friends or connections in the industry, I reached out to a photographer on Instagram who I had seen a few times at shows hoping I could get some advice and that’s when I met my friend Christian Bourdeau who gave me insight on how to reach out to artists. The following day, I woke up determined and sent out too many emails to count to every artist playing in LA. The effort was worth it because I booked my first photography gig with Two Door Cinema Club at The Shrine and it was the first dream of many come true. I went to TIME Nightclub in OC the following day to shoot Ilan Bluestone, (trance DJ), and that is where I met Evan Kinard, founder of Killed With Kindness, who did all the media for the nightclub and the person who I had to impress with my photos. I drove back home to LA, stayed up until 5 am editing and that was when I realized I’ll have to sleep when I’m dead because this dream was worth pursuing.

I got invited to shoot at TIME Nightclub again on behalf of Killed With Kindness and over the next year, I slowly transitioned to spending every single weekend driving two hours from LA Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays to practice and chase my craft as it became more important than anything else. I had to let my old self die of just going to the shows as a fan and hustle like I had never before so I could do what I love. Nothing comes easy and I had to make some sacrifices to get where I am, but I now have the ability to give hope and inspire my friends, family, and others on chasing that special dream that makes them feel alive because time does not forgive.

As the weeks and months went by, one DJ tuned into two then four then twenty. Now at twenty-two years old, I’ve had the opportunity to travel and film in ten countries, gotten to know a plethora of talented artists, provide value to brands and companies and capture the energy at the biggest music festivals in the world like EDC Las Vegas, Tomorrowland, and Ultra Europe. All with the support of Killed With Kindness and my mentor, hustle advisor, and boyfriend Evan Kinard because of my continued effort and passion. Passion is everything.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be a professional photographer and even though I’ve now shot live events, weddings, products, and corporate events I never accepted myself to be one. Until now.

Please tell us about your art.
At music festivals or shows, there’s always that moment when everyone in the crowd facing the DJ holds their hands up anticipating the drop with so much excitement the room explodes with energy. Lights flash from every direction, fans jump up and down, the crowd chants in unison and that creates a magical moment that, to me, is worth capturing.

Photography is my creative meditation and it has given me the opportunity to capture the essence of music, traditions, landscapes, cultures, and people which are all subjects I feel fascinated with in life. I hope to give people a glimpse of the way I see the world and invite them to want to see it for themselves.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
In my opinion, the biggest challenge facing artists today is without a doubt self-doubt due to the rise of social media so it’s vital to produce more content than one consumes.

We live in a great time with so many opportunities at our hands to improve our lives and the lives of others so, as someone once told me, “do something every day that makes all your tomorrow’s better because you only live once.”
