Meet Danielle Eze of Del Mar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Eze

Hi Danielle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been an artist my whole life but chose a more traditional educational and career path out of financial need. Inspired by artists within my extended family at a young age, I started out with drawing and impressionist painting. After being diagnosed with cancer in my 20’s, I began abstract painting as a transformative coping mechanism. This pivotal experience revealed a profound need for creative expression, which had been lacking in my life. After successful careers in engineering and strategy consulting and completing three wildly different degrees along the way, I have now shifted to full-time art and embraced the expressive side that has been fighting to come out my whole life. What was once my outlet to help me cope and heal in an unfair and unpredictable world has transformed my structured mindset into one that finds beauty in chaos and joy in the unknown.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Throughout my life, I often found myself in highly organized, structured environments surrounded by engineers bound by numbers, business professionals focused on profits, and risk-adverse pragmatists who didn’t understand or support my drive for expression. I often felt lonely or lost even when I was successful by American standards. Major life challenges including illness, divorce, and motherhood all forced me to slow down and reevaluate my values and identity, eventually leading me to the art community where I feel understood and connected like I never have before. I would paint everyday all day if I was able to. The expression brings me perspective and healing and makes me a better human.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I focus on abstract multimedia painting to distill the essence of organic forms – from turbulent oceans to vibrant desert horizons as well as the emotional pull I feel from each. Influenced by extensive travel, my passion for outdoor exploration, and experiences testing my personal resilience, my art embodies the tension between chaos and serenity. I have used every type of paint that exists as well as many other mediums for thickening or thinning paints including wax, salt, sand, shells, feathers, clay, plaster, coffee, and wine! I strive to create a feeling of immersion in all of my works that pulls the viewer in and helps them connect more deeply with their own emotional reactions.

How do you define success?
I consider the goal of my artistic expression to be understood and understand others better. I love nothing more than the moment that others strongly connect with my art and we both feel seen and aligned. I’ve had some of the most meaningful conversations in those moments with similar souls and it is powerful to connect well beyond the superficial. I’m the kind of person who hates discussing the weather and asks questions about life goals and values at a party. I want to deeply know people and my art is one method of achieving that.
