Today we’d like to introduce you to David Bareno.
David, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my first company in 2002 while also working for a contracting company; the business was Flip Seven Snowboards. We designed and manufactured custom snowboards and merchadise. My snowboard company eventually went belly up in 2008 due to manufaturing issues and the economy recession.
I segued from the snowboard industry to a printing business that I eventually sold to another local San Diego printing company in 2010.
Fast forward several years later…
Think Box Concepts was born to help entrepreneurs navigate the business landscape. Think Box pivoted to focus solely on marketing services to fill the need for entrepreneurs who understood their product but not necessarily how to best market them.
This year (2020) Think Box Concepts was purchased by Southern California Design Co. (SC Design Co.) in Carlsbad and I am now a partner in SC Design Co. Under the umbrella, I am the Chief Marketing Officer for the SCDC organization, including marketing their golf business, Indi Golf Clubs.
I was introduced to SC Design Co. through Life Lounge San Diego, founded by Tim Owens, because of a golf game improvement product I invented, The Scratch Stick. SC Design Co. took on my project, and we ultimately decided to work together on more permanent basis.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As rocky as it gets… nothing is easy being an entrepreneur. I lost my shirt and then some on my snowboard company. It gave me my ‘MBA of hard knocks’ and I will not make the same mistakes twice. You could say I have been playing defense, until recently. It’s important not to get too attached to the product or company so you know when to adapt to changing circumstances. Adapt or die.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Southern California Design Co – what should we know?
We help people take an idea and make it a reality, and can offer services for whatever stage of product development is needed. Southern California Design Co provides Product Design, Engineer, and Consumer Product Sourcing and Manufacturing expertise. We now offering Marketing Services for our valued client base as well.
We are known for developing quality products for retail sales. Examples of products we’ve worked on include Orvis Fishing Reels, Indi Golf Clubs, PK 360 Grills to name a few.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Pure grit and determination… Follow through and execute, even if it is not perfect, to keep moving to ultimately keep moving forward.
