David and Celia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
studioConover is a cross-discipline design studio specializing in Integrated Brand Strategie, and Architectural Materials, Finishes and Product Consultation — for the Built Environment.
We design Contexture. Contexture — defined as the arrangement and union of constituent parts — describes how our design process is shaped. It explains what we strive for and what we declare. Whether selecting a specific brick shape, a particular exterior color, or specifying an historic woodtype letterform, (con)texture remains the predominant underlying component simply because it is so representative of the work we do.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Begin when you’re young enough to be enthusiastic to make a design partnership work. And, dumb enough to be unaware of the business traps that could befall you. Leave petty interpersonal relationship egos at the door. Learn to break away from “learned helplessness” and keep debt low. For certain it’s been a combination of good luck and perseverance and it would be foolish to say there weren’t bumps and bruises along the way, but, when you look in the rearview mirror and see that a balance of acceptance and fortitude can fuel you, keep that formula fresh.

studioConover — owned by Cecelia and David Conover — is an Architectural Color and Materials Consultancy, and Integrated Branding Design Firm. Their design studio, located in San Diego, was established in 1985.
