Meet David Crabtree of Dr. David Crabtree

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. David Crabtree.

Hi Dr. Crabtree, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I moved to San Diego in 2015 for residency training at UCSD. During this time, I also completed an MPH in epidemiology from SDSU. I then completed fellowship training in Utah and worked in LA for Kaiser. I’ve been back in San Diego for 1 year now and have been working on establishing and opening my private practice just down from the Hillcrest sign. I know the seriousness of drug and alcohol problems in our community and hope to use my training and experience to help others in their efforts to lead a happier and healthier life.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The political, regulatory, and legal environments can be a minefield – especially as it relates to addiction and mental health issues. Thankfully, media attention and public outcry has shed light on these issues. So, hopefully, people are becoming more open and accepting of addiction as a disease that is treatable.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a double board-certified physician treating drug addictions such as Alcohol and Opioid addictions and mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. I am one of the first physicians to have completed addiction medicine fellowship after the specialty was officially recognized several years ago. I originally came to San Diego in 2015 to complete residency at UCSD and fell in love with the area. After completing fellowship in Utah and working for Kaiser in Los Angeles for a couple of years, I decided to return to San Diego. Frustrated with a profit-driven “medical system” where I am allowed 15 minutes with patients, I decided to take the plunge into opening my private practice because service to patients is in dire need. I want readers to know that I am here to help. I have much easier appointment availability and can spend much more time with patients than the average doctor working in “the system.” I also practice using Harm Reduction to help patients. Further, I am known for being a “No BS” and “Tell It Like It Is” doc who puts patients – and not the system – first.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My grandparents raised me. I couldn’t have done this without excellent teachers throughout all my education, though patients are the most important teachers I’ve had.

Locally to San Diego, I couldn’t have done this without Dr. Linda Hill’s encouragement.
