Meet David Montoya

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Montoya.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
While in college I decided to have a drawing of mine tattooed on my arm. I went to one of the local shops in my college town, “The Zone” in Warrensburg, MO.

During my tattoo session, my artist and later mentor, Scott Nusbaum, asked me if I had ever thought about tattooing. After my appointment, the owner of the shop, Mark Montgomery, a well-known APP piercer, proceeded to offer me an apprenticeship. I came back a few weeks later and I was there every day practicing the trade.

Once I graduated college, I almost immediately moved to San Diego. Here I met tattooers Jerry Walker and Chris Reed. We all got along really well and together we decided to open our own shop, Adams Avenue Tattoo. We’ve been happily tattooing in paradise, working every day to improve our skills and put out the best work possible.

Please tell us about your art.
I enjoy doing most any style of tattooing, but if I had to choose my favorite it would have to be realism or galaxy style tattoos. I am inspired mostly by movies and music, but you never know what might spark an idea, it can happen anywhere, by anything. I just hope my work always brings joy to the people who get to wear or see it.

How can artists connect with other artists?
Social Media has made connecting to other artists considerably easier, especially if you aren’t the most outgoing person, it’s as simple as sending a message. As a tattooer, I also find that going to conventions near you can help you spread your name and work amongst like-minded artist and connoisseurs.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Instagram is the best and easiest way to see my work. My personal Instagram, I keep my most up to date work there.

If anyone is interested in being tattooed by myself or my colleagues you can contact via Instagram, our website, phone, or just stop by the shop.
