Today we’d like to introduce you to David Pearson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us David. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was first introduced to design through surfing. As a competitive surfer in high school, I got a job at a surfboard manufacturer to save up for college. There I was trained as a glasser – applying the resin coat and attaching fins to a shaped board. A high level of craft and design goes into making a surfboard which can then be directly tested in the water. It instilled in me a habit of questioning and testing that I still use today.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As a curious person, I find the critical thinking necessary to developing a skill comes naturally. I am always researching or considering some aspect of the world – whether it be economics or art. Architecture is so broad in its thinking and application that I can find a way to incorporate all of my interests.
PALO – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My wife and I started PALO to work together combining Architecture and Landscape Architecture. We met in college and always liked engaging the creative process together. We feel that collaboration and iteration are inherent to the design process and it is fun looking at a project collectively. Because we combine Architecture and Landscape Architecture, we can approach a project from different scales. Ecological and contextual sensitivity is combined with a sense of play.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My definition of success is all about flexibility. Flexibility for us means different things at different times. Flexibility in work means having the ability to accept the projects we are interested in. Flexibility in task means being able to choose how to partition our time. Setting our schedule allows us to prioritize analogous activities, such as teaching, into our lives which in turn enriches our design thinking and connects us to the larger design community. This was especially important when our daughter was born. It means a lot that we can spend time with her.
