Today we’d like to introduce you to David Shapiro
Hi David, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Arrested for a crime I, admittedly, did commit in 2004, I’ve experienced firsthand the same fear, uncertainty, and concern for my future and freedom so many of my firm’s clients undergo when arrested or under investigation for allegedly committing a crime. That experience motivates me each and every day to provide the best representation possible to any and all who entrust my Firm to handle their criminal defense matter in their time of need.
Practicing exclusively criminal defense in San Diego since 2007, I have built one of San Diego’s most respected criminal defense firms since opening its doors in 2010. The firm has recently been recognized as one of the nation’s fastest growing law firms in the United States by LawFirm500, was a 2022 Better Business Bureau Torch Awards for Ethics Winner and was recognized by the San Diego Business Journal as the 17th Fastest Growing Private Company in San Diego from 2019-2021. Personally, I was a 2022 SD500 Winner as One of San Diego’s 500 Most Influential People per the San Diego Business Journal.
While I am revered (half kidding) in both New York (where I grew up) and New Orleans (where I lived from 2003-2006), my home in San Diego since 2006 is where I have been fortunate enough to create a lasting impact to the community. And the work has, God willing, just begun.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
What may be a small incline walk for some may be a mountain for others. Obstacles and challenges are all relative.
I can talk about losing my father when I was only 10 years old and how that was difficult to overcome. It was, but I also had numerous older family members step in to fill that void the best they could. I can talk about not getting into my dream law school and how I moped in my college apartment for a week (all while wearing that school’s hoodie), but that rejection led me to Tulane and New Orleans where I lived from 2003-2006. I can talk about how getting arrested at age 22, right before final exams my first year of law school and spending time in jail left me ashamed and uncertain for my future. But that experience turned into a central motivating factor for me and is at the forefront of the law firm’s existence. I can talk about how Hurricane Katrina displaced me from New Orleans and deprived me of nearly 4 months in the city I loved. But my apartment was still there when I returned, my FEMA funds came quickly, and I had the full financial support of my family in New York. And because of Hurricane Katrina, I came to San Diego for the first time in the fall of 2005, and decided to move here for good after graduating law school at Tulane in the Spring of 2006. But for Hurricane Katrina, I never would have met my wife and had the life I have lived in San Diego since. And then there’s the ups and downs of running a business!
We all have obstacles and challenges we must overcome to continue to grow, both personally and professionally. Some have been easier than others, but overall I would say I have been pretty blessed and fortunate the way things have played out.
We’ve been impressed with David P. Shapiro Criminal Defense Attorneys, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We help good people regain control of their future when charged with a crime. A full team of attorneys and assistants providing honest answers, clear explanations, and unsurpassed excellence in criminal defense representation throughout San Diego County, we have secured not guilty verdicts and/or dismissals for our clients in criminal cases ranging from first time misdemeanor DUIs to murder.
What matters most to you?
Always doing things the right way, no matter how long it takes or how much it costs; no matter who (if anyone) is watching. I also try to be very intentional in everything I do, meaning that there are no days off. Each day, and each part of the day, should be focused on getting better as a father, husband, business owner, and/or criminal defense attorney. I wouldn’t want it any other way.
