Meet Derek Marsh of Derek Chad Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek Marsh.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am the owner/photographer at Derek Chad Photography. I got my start, like many others, when my kids were born. My husband and I have identical twin boys that just turned 6 years old. I wanted to document their lives in a creative way and I had always had an interest in photography. So, I purchased my first DSLR about 5 years ago. The more I learned… the more I wanted to learn, grow, and create. I started with portraits and headshots… then moved into photographing weddings. As a gay man getting married a long time ago, I had a hard time finding a photographer that was talented who we also felt comfortable with. So, I am passionate about being that comfort and talent for EVERYONE that goes in front of my camera.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I must admit, it has been relatively smooth for me. I started out getting paid pennies, just trying to get my name out there. But my passion, drive, and creative photos took me to another level pretty quick and I am SO fortunate. I did have some struggles along the way… one thing was getting some decent gear when I was getting started, it’s so expensive and shocking when you are just starting out. But I have met some rad people and travelled to some amazing local and international locations in a very short amount of time and I could not be more thankful.

Please tell us about Derek Chad Photography.
Well, I specialize in portraits and weddings. Recently I have been known for my fine-art portraits of the male and female bodies. As for weddings, I am probably known for my fine-art portraits of brides and grooms. I’m also pretty well known in the LGBTQ community for wedding photography. Personally, I am most proud to have recently become an Associate member of WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International). To become an “Associate” you have to submit photos to their competition and win an award for those photos at least five times, and I have accomplished that this year in 2017.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started earlier. I absolutely LOVE photography… it has easily been one of the best decisions I have made, ever.
