Meet Derrick Shepard and Nikki Ruesch of Reset Mind & Body Float Therapy in Ocean Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Shepard and Nikki Ruesch.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Derrick and Nikki. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was first introduced to float therapy/sensory deprivation through the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. I was going through a particularly difficult time in my life, and I had to move away from San Diego. Joe Rogan is constantly referencing Float Lab in Venice Beach, Ca and has the coolest quotes when describing the benefits of floating; “The sensory deprivation chamber is the most important tool I’ve ever used for developing my mind, for thinking, for evolving” (Joe Rogan). I figured, what do I have to lose? After first float at float lab, I was a completely transformed, I reached a level of relaxation I didn’t know existed, my stress was gone, my body renewed. After my first float experience, I knew without a doubt that owning my own float spa, was going to be my life’s purpose. Fast forward a few floats and weeks later, I met Nikki at a house party. She and I talked for hours about floating. We immediately clicked, and became really good friends. A few months later, we went on our first date to Float Lab. Afterward we walked around Venice Beach totally zenned out. I was currently working an office job I hated, and Nikki had a dream of traveling around the world. After dating for 2 weeks, it took her 5 seconds to convince me to quit my job and buy a one way ticket to Thailand. We traveled the world for 7 months straight, dreaming about opening a float spa.

We are beyond thrilled and grateful to start our float spa in the raddest community in San Diego; Ocean Beach. Nothing beats finishing a float session, and walking down to the beach to catch the sunset or listen to the waves, and get the feeling that all is right in the world. At times its really surreal when we look back at our journey, from being at my lowest point, to the decision to float for the first time, finding purpose, meeting Nikki, traveling the world together, moving to OB, and starting our float spa, Reset.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting a business is never easy. We both started out in completely different careers, Nikki was a high school teacher and I worked in an office. We were surprised at how many people are not familiar with float therapy, unless you’re an avid Joe Rogan listener. We didn’t factor in educating the community as much, but in the end it just made us better business owners.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Reset Mind & Body Float Therapy – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Reset Mind & Body Float Therapy is a sensory deprivation float spa. Sensory Deprivation/Float Therapy is the process of floating effortlessly in a light and sound free chamber filled with 12 inches of skin temperature water of 94-95°, filled with 1000 lbs. of dissolved Epsom salt. Soaking in Epsom Salt (sulfate magnesium) provides relief from inflammation and soothes muscle and joint pain. When your mind does not have to process information such as light, sound, and even gravity, your mind and body are able to fully relax, creating the feeling of floating in outer space.

Isolating your senses allow your mind and body to release stress, tension, and anxiety, resulting in a euphoric feeling. After your float your senses are essentially reset and heightened. You become super present and mindful of yourself and your surrounding environment.

Our float spa is unique to most other facilities. Since our shop is small, we made the best of it and created an original cozy little float bungalow to reflect our personalities. Floating with Reset feels like your floating at home.

Reset gives you access to a unique holistic wellness experience. After your float you have the opportunity to explore the vibrant neighborhood of Ocean Beach. OB offers such a variety of things to do and see, places to eat, and if nothing else, enjoy the beauty of the Pacific Ocean post float.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are excited to pursue partnerships with local artists around San Diego. Float Therapy does amazing things for the creative process, it’s like starting with a blank slate and the imagination can run wild. We are looking forward to putting on an art show, exhibiting art that is inspired by their experience in a sensory deprivation float tank.
