Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Daly.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been an entrepreneur since I was in my mid twenties. I went to Indonesia on my honeymoon and, after my mother passed away from breast cancer and left me a couple thousand dollars, I started my first import business. I started designing, manufacturing and imported original furniture. I did trade shows all over the country and grew the business very quickly. At the same time, got pregnant and started my family. Since then, I’ve had several successful retail consignment shops. After selling them off, I decided to manufacture a skin moisturizing product called Luscious made with coconut oils from Bali. I began selling at retail stores, festivals and open markets. I expanded my products to sell crystal, candles, incense and gifts. I was in 7 locations in LA and Orange County. Recently, I decided to close all of those locations and open my own retail store. I have a beautiful store location in Dana Point called Luscious Boutique with everything from apparel, vintage, jewelry, gifts, dream catchers, original art and so much more. I love supporting local artists and other female entrepreneurs.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve had many struggles along the way. Firstly, I lost my beautiful mother to breast cancer at a very young age. Years later I, myself tested positive for BRCA, a genetic mutation, that gives you a predisposition for getting breast or ovarian cancers, just to name a few. Subsequently, I had my ovaries removed and prophylactic double mastectomies. Additionally and unfortunately, my marriage did not survive and I divorced when my kids were young and I was a single Mom. I’ve since remarried 16 years ago and now I have a thriving relationship and business!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The thing that I am most known for is my ability to take an idea and vision and bring it to fruition. When I developed my Luscious coconut oil products, I did it on single trip to Indonesia and 2 months later I had a container of product on a ship and headed for the United States. I designed every aspect of the sustainable packaging, came up with the scents and found the right partner to make it happen. I’m also known for the beautiful and relaxing esthetics of my store. I’ve created a space that hits all the senses: its visually appealing with all it’s vignettes and eye popping crystals, it sounds amazing with all the fountains and water features running, it smells incredible with all the oils, candles and incense, and it feels wonderful to try the oils on your skin or pick up the trinkets and feel the quality. Additionally, we are located next to a very popular restaurant that has a yummy bakery!
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
That you can always start over no matter how old you are. Due to many unforeseen circumstances, I’ve had to start over and reinvent myself too many times to count, Whether it’s personal relationships or bad business ventures, you can always start over and make a successful new beginning! I opened Luscious Boutique at the age of 59. Just never give up and try to find the confidence within yourself. It also takes a good support system which I have with my husband and our 4 children!
