Today we’d like to introduce you to Diane Roberts.
Diane, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started teaching yoga 26 years ago and had a serious back injury while doing an extreme back bend. I believed “Yoga Injury” should be an oxymoron, so I went back to the drawing board and created a Yoga Style that was based on functional anatomy, clear, concise guidance, and knowledge of the challenges of the Western lifestyle.
I then opened Foundation Yoga Center and had continued to grow the school with the mission to create a sanctuary from busy lives where all-level students can find a safe space to create optimum health through yoga, and alternative therapies. We just celebrated our 22nd year in business!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been challenging as any business owner will admit, but I have always found great resources to guide me through. The biggest challenges for me have come from my own health issues which have made it hard at times to keep my focus and energy on the Center.
I am a breast cancer survivor and have struggled with Epstein Barr Virus for decades which at times has made fatigue an overwhelming issue. As with everything else in life, I have found the help I’ve needed and moved forward, sometimes in baby steps but always toward strength and vitality.
The Foundation Yoga & Wellness Center community, my family, my spiritual commitment and my determination to live a full and vibrant life have pulled me through every challenge life has presented.
Please tell us about the Foundation Yoga and Wellness Center.
Our Yoga Center is known for Wellness Yoga as opposed to Fitness Yoga. Our classes are smaller, more intimate than most other studios. Our sequences are slower and focus on deep stretches, strength building, and personalized practice. Teachers are steeped in knowledge of modifications in each pose so even students with limitations or injuries can find a safe and empowering way to practice. And those who want to intensify their practice will find guidance for that as well.
Through my personal healing journey, I have learned powerful tools to help low back, hip, neck and shoulder issues. I have studied therapeutic yoga styles, methods that use therapy balls and resistance techniques to take flexibility, strength, health, and well-being to the next level. I incorporate it all into my classes, so students leave feeling like they’ve had a great yoga class, a massage, and a core activating session.
We are welcoming, supportive and have to build a sweet community of students and teachers that truly like each other and celebrate each other’s successes. I’m proud of sustaining a beautiful business that has truly helped people for more than 20 years.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have looked for more support from the beginning. Other than that I wish my health challenges had not been so great. It would have given me even more energy to do the things I’m committed to doing.
