Meet Diego Carmona

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diego Carmona.

Diego, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I moved to the United States when I was 18 years old. I started working at a construction company doing minimum wage and working 40 to 45 hours a week. I always had a passion for music, specifically for the DJ world, so I decided to join Scratch DJ Academy to learn the basics of DJing and more than that. I didn’t have to pay rent because I was living with my mom and her boyfriend, so the money I was making even though it wasn’t a lot was enough for me to start buying and purchasing the DJ gear I needed to DJ at small house parties or small events. I graduated when I was 19 from Scratch DJ Academy Los Angeles and during my learning process, I met one of my best friends Joseph Rivera AKA DJ MoJoe. He asked me if I wanted to work for him at his events where he used to DJ and I said yes of course, at the academy they teach you how to be a nightclub/bar DJ but not really a wedding DJ even though our final was the simulation of a wedding night.

I helped Mojoe at weddings in Malibu, Santa Monica, and high-end venues that made me fall in love with the wedding industry and that’s how I decided that I wanted to be a wedding DJ. I met DJ Los, he owns a company named LosEntertainment and he noticed that I had talent on the decks but I didn’t have clients reaching out to me (Being a 19 year old trying to DJ big weddings it’s not that easy) so he decided to hire me and let me do the small weddings and events, that’s how I started getting more experience and knowledge behind the facade. It was not as easy as I thought, I grew up in El Salvador and the music that people listen here in California is way different, especially because the majority of Latinos are Mexican and didn’t know much about their unique musical genres. After one year of djing small events and gathering enough content to publish, I decided to join WeddingWire, a wedding website where you can find all the wedding vendors you need, thanks to WeddingWire in 2019 I DJ 16 weddings on my own, with my own gear and my own team.

2020 it was looking awesome but COVID-19 had me postponing most of the weddings that I had. I’m really excited to keep working as a DJ. It really doesn’t feel as if I’m working. Actually, every time I buy new DJ gear, it’s like buying a new toy for me and because I have a full-time job, I don’t have to depend on DJ incomes, so I actually get to enjoy it, like a getaway from my daily routine. Really looking forward to my future as a DJ!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
English, I moved from Latin America, so I was a little bit shy when I needed to get on the mic because even though I went to college for ESL people can notice my accent. DJ gear it’s expensive and I don’t like to apply for credits. Everything that I have is mine, but saving up to $3000 just to buy two speakers can be hard if you are doing it on your own. Being your own boss requires a lot of discipline, that’s been hard.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
As DJ DGO more than providing a service I like to provide an experience, I understand that a wedding it’s a unique moment that everyone dreams about and as the DJ I’m in charge of providing the entertainment not only to the bride and groom but to their family and friends too. I care about them and I put myself in their shoes, for me it’s always about them, the music that they want to listen to during their wedding day and what they want to dance to. I bring my energy, my mixing skills, and my professionalism to make everything comes out even better than that they expected.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being a Hard worker, always bringing a good attitude to the weddings I DJ, creating solutions and not excuses.
