Today we’d like to introduce you to Dieter Steinmetz.
Dieter, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Compounding is the art of formulating custom medications for individual patients. It relies on the triad of the patient, doctor and pharmacist working together to provide the best outcome for the patient. I started compounding about 20 years ago. I have developed close relationships with many doctors and many patients over the years. My goal is to always look for the best combination of medications and dosages for each patient.
I purchased Med-Rx pharmacy on Coast Hwy in Oceanside in 2006 and thus Coast Compounding Pharmacy was born. We have been at this location for the past 13 years. We specialize in Bio-identical hormone replacement for both women and men and thyroid formulations. We also compound for pets thus have a wide variety of compounded formulations. We do not offer sterile compounded medications.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have had steady growth over the years but as the requirements have changed over the years from the State and federal government, so we have had to overcome obstacles. The pharmacy started out looking like any other mom and pop retail pharmacy with an over the counter section with vitamins, first aid, health and beauty, birthday cards, etc. Now more closely resemble a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility.

We specialize in Bio-identical hormone replacement for both women and men and thyroid formulations. We also compound for pets thus have a wide variety of compounded formulations.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe that taking care of each patient like they are a family member is most important. We do not just fill prescriptions for patients but are actively involved in helping design each formula. Our goal is to have our patients be symptom free as much as possible. In many cases, all their symptoms are resolved. My employees are also treated like family members. We all work very hard each day but we have a family atmosphere.
Pricing:
- A Patient would need to budget about $60 per month for bio-identical hormones for women
- A Patient would need to budget about $75 to $95 per month for bio-identical hormones for men
- Veterinary formulations can vary quite a bit but $35 to $50 would be common.
