Today we’d like to introduce you to Dom Jackson.
Dom, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Playing Football in high school I learned the basics of exercise and health and fitness. After graduating I worked a series of jobs from grocery stores to retail while attending Rutgers University to study marketing. While trying to figure out the balance from school, my fitness and jobs becoming a personal trainer became the obvious solution. I have been a personal trainer for five years and moved to San Diego in January of 2019. I have trained clients of all ages and backgrounds. I wanted a way to get new clients and teach my current ones new things I started my podcast the “Fitness Fundamentals Podcast” in the fall of 2018. After wanting to cover a broader spectrum of topics besides fitness, I rebranded the podcast with my name as “The Dom Jackson Experience”. Training, podcasting and exploring the wonders of southern California have been my focuses since moving to this city.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been smooth. The fear of being in charge of the health of someone older than you was a big struggle of mine in the beginning. The learning of people’s different mindsets and physical conditions are all struggles as far as my training career. As far as transiting into SD, I moved in with my brother so I had a network of people welcoming me. The podcast struggles are still very much happening. The process of learning recording and editing software, picking guest and setting up interviews and making content are all constant battles. I am far from where I want to be but, I am happy to be where I am.
Please tell us about your business.
As a personal trainer my business to based on understanding the daily lives of my clients. Fitness can be intimidating for people who do not understand it. My strength is to teach people to step by step what they need to do to get to their fitness goals. Most of the client’s I train are in the work force and haven’t found a way to integrate fitness into it yet, my job is to make it as simple as ABC.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
One of the proudest moments of my career was helping a bride to lose 35lbs in five months to fit into her dress. Since that date she has become a mom and kept up with the healthy habits I taught her.
