Meet Donna Sly of Face-Body-Spirit in North Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Sly.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It’s a bit of a winding road, but my career path began at the CIA. (The Culinary Institute of America, not the Central Intelligence Agency. 😉 I spent over 25 years as a professional chef, including my final 17 years in the field as chef and co-owner of a boutique catering company in San Diego. Looking for a little balance to counter the high-energy and stressful (but fun) foodservice industry, I attended Mueller College of Holistic Studies to learn therapeutic massage along with holistic health concepts. After getting licensed, I started as a self-employed massage therapist working on clients during my “off-time” from the restaurant and catering world. After many years, much soul searching, and surviving the ups and downs of the economy, I decided to leave my catering business and pursue a career more focused on health and wellness. I enrolled in an esthetics program, earned my esthetician license, then trained further in holistic skincare practices, techniques and botanical/herbal product knowledge. I am now a Certified Holistic Skincare Practitioner.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting and running a business always has it’s ups and downs. I was, and am, super fortunate to have my treatment room in a health center with a wonderful “landlord” and fantastic group of people. My clients are a joy. Weathering the down-times without feeling stressed about an unfilled schedule has been a bit of a challenge, but I’ve come to trust that it will pick up again—and it always does. The business of running a business, i.e. keeping up with the barrage of new products, procedures and machines, and the constant marketing and social media posts can feel overwhelming at times.

Please tell us about Face-Body-Spirit.
I specialize in custom holistic skincare using organic and natural products with non-invasive techniques like microcurrent, ultrasound, oxygen infusion, Rezenerate nano-technology and facial cupping. Each facial is a balanced, nutritious “meal” for the skin given in a relaxed and caring environment. When someone comes regularly, the treatments evolve as their skin changes.

People often ask what holistic skincare is. It’s taking the whole person into consideration when choosing a treatment and recommending home care. Diet and lifestyle directly affect your skin. Sharing my knowledge and experience helps my clients choose a path for achieving and maintaining healthy, rejuvenated skin.
I am always thrilled when a client tells me they received an unsolicited compliment on their skin. 🙂

I’m very grateful when the gift someone asks for or wants to give, is a Gift Certificate for my services.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite memories is climbing into the back of the family station wagon (this was before everyone had to wear a seat-belt!) with our sleeping bags and little goodie baskets on our way to visit our grandparents in NY city. My brothers would gobble up their treats right away—mine would last the whole 7-hour trip. 🙂
