Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorret Gibson
Hi Dorret, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m excited to share the story behind Our Nurturing Nest, where my passion for supporting NICU families and postpartum moms truly began. The journey wasn’t a straight path but a winding road with unexpected detours and maybe a few potholes.
It all started in Birmingham, England, where I first donned my nurse’s cap as a Registered General Nurse. My nursing career was thriving, but like many, I had a hunger for more—so I packed my bags and went on an adventure to Los Angeles as a travel nurse. If nursing was my first love, the legal world became my curious fling. I attended law school, thinking I might trade in my stethoscope for a gavel. I earned a Master’s in law from the University of San Diego, with an emphasis in law and medicine because why not?
But here’s the thing: The law, while fascinating, lacked the heartbeat I’d grown accustomed to in nursing. I missed the one-on-one connections, the late-night conversations with patients, and the privilege of being there when people needed support the most. So, I returned to the bedside wiser and with a more rounded view of the world.
Fast forward to my motherhood journey, which almost didn’t happen. The window for starting a family was closing fast, but thanks to modern medicine, I found myself on the rollercoaster of parenthood. At 26 weeks, the ride took a sharp turn when I went into preterm labor. I remember lying in that hospital bed, listening to a neonatologist lay out the terrifying risks my unborn child faced. Then, unbeknown to me, the actual seed for Our Nurturing Nest was planted—as my husband and I grappled with the uncertainty of our child’s future.
My first birth experience wasn’t exactly the stuff of dreams. If anything, it was more of a nightmare—think of all the issues laid bare in “The Business of Being Born,” a documentary co-produced by Riki Lake. I walked away, having experienced a traumatic birth that I relived in the form of flashbacks during my second pregnancy. These challenges fueled my passion and helped steer me back to my roots, this time with a laser focus on helping other moms navigate their complex journeys. When I talk to parents in the NICU now, there’s a connection that goes beyond the usual bedside manner. They ask if I have kids, and when I say yes, I see the weight lift from their shoulders. They know I’ve been where they are—I’ve felt that fear, that helplessness. And that’s why I do what I do.
Our Nurturing Nest isn’t just a business; it’s my mission. It’s about taking the empathy, resilience, and unwavering support I’ve built and offering it to families when they need it most. Because every family deserves a soft landing, and every mom deserves a place to feel heard, understood, and empowered. And let’s be honest, who couldn’t use a bit of nurturing now and then?
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Working with families is like a delicate dance. For one minute, I’m performing intricate care for a newborn, and the next, I’m the calm in the storm for parents facing the unimaginable. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between clinical practice and heartfelt empathy, ensuring every detail is spot-on while guiding families through one of the most challenging times of their lives.
But rather than letting these challenges knock me off balance, I see them as opportunities to create something significant. That’s how Our Nurturing Nest came to be—a place where clinical experience meets compassionate care. I developed a communication framework that keeps parents in the loop as integral players in their baby’s care.
Eventually, when the hospital stay ends, it doesn’t mean the support has to. The transition home can feel like being up the creek without a paddle, so I offer tailored postpartum care, with in-home consultations and ongoing support, to help new parents confidently sail through those first few months.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Our Nurturing Nest?
At Our Nurturing Nest, I specialize in in-home care and support for postpartum moms and families transitioning from the NICU to home life. What sets me apart is the personalized care I offer to each family. I combine clinical experience with emotional support to ensure every parent feels confident and empowered. I focus on in-home consultations, overnight care, lactation support, infant massage, and emotional guidance—all tailored to the unique needs of moms recovering postpartum and parents adjusting to home life after the NICU.
I’m known for bridging the gap between hospital care and home life. After years spent working in neonatal care, I’ve seen firsthand how parents leaving the NICU often feel overwhelmed, uncertain, and, quite frankly, scared. My mission is to turn that fear into confidence, offering expert care and reassurance that parents are not alone.
What sets Our Nurturing Nest apart is the combination of postpartum and NICU knowledge with the warmth of a guiding hand that genuinely understands the emotional toll of the NICU and postpartum journey. I bring knowledge, empathy, humor, and a calm voice of reason to help parents feel at ease. My experience in postpartum recovery, NICU care, and European training allows me to provide a unique level of one-on-one care to families directly in their homes.
What I’m most proud of is the transformation I see in families. Watching them grow from feeling lost and overwhelmed to becoming confident, capable caregivers is incredibly rewarding. It’s not just about getting through birth and the NICU—it’s about thriving afterward.
I want readers to know that Our Nurturing Nest is here to provide expert, compassionate, and personalized support for NICU parents and postpartum moms alike. Whether helping a mom with breastfeeding, teaching infant massage to comfort babies, and as a tool for parent/infant bonding, or simply offering emotional guidance, I’m committed to making the journey from NICU to home a positive and empowering experience.
So, if you’re a mom fresh after birth, an executive mom juggling work and family, a stay-at-home mom adjusting to a new routine, or a celebrity mom finding your stride, or a family home straight after the NICU, wondering, “What now?”—you’re not alone. At Our Nurturing Nest, I help turn that uncertainty into confidence so you can focus on what truly matters: nurturing yourself and your baby.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
While this isn’t quite my favorite memory, it’s relevant to my vision of compassionate care in the community, and I’ve come to value the sentiment and tradition behind it. When I was nine, I came down with mumps; our family doctor, in true British tradition, made a house call, bringing care and comfort directly to our home. I didn’t fully appreciate the significance then, but that experience left a lasting impression.
Years later, after an emergency C-section with my first child here in the U.S., I found myself in pain, sitting in a crowded pediatrician’s office just three days after major surgery. In that moment, I longed for the compassionate, in-home care I had received as a child in the UK.
Similarly, my goal is to soften the transition from hospital to home for postpartum moms and NICU families with personalized care reminiscent of those early European house calls. I ensure that mothers and babies receive the best support in the comfort of their own homes, with a sprinkle of British charm, one family at a time.
