Today we’d like to introduce you to Doru Tifui and James Simpson.
Award-winning Martinis Above Fourth Table + Stage, San Diego’s premier live music venue and supper club, is located in the heart of Hillcrest. Owners Jim Simpson and Doru Tifui, had a vision for a much-needed live entertainment, cabaret/supper club venue in San Diego when they purchased Martinis Above Fourth in 2011. The restaurant/bar has undergone two major transformations since that time including professional building of the stage, the dining room, the addition of professional lighting and sound systems, and bar remodeling.
Martinis Above Fourth entertainment started slowly building a name for itself, with smaller acts and more modest performances. In a few years, it became the premiere cabaret/supper club in southern California, hosting prestigious acts and entertainers with world renown curriculum such as Grammy Award Winners, Tony Award Winners, Emmy Award Winners, and multi-platinum selling artists that placed Martinis Above Fourth on the international entertainment map.
Thanks to Simpson and Tifui, MA4 is also well-known for being a committed community partner by hosting The Center’s annual Wreath Auction, Dining Out for Life events, and performances benefiting The Trevor Project, PAWS, Fraternity House, Holiday Magic, Wounded Warriors Project and many other charitable organizations. By holding these benefits MA4 has raised over $250,000 for charities and continues to support the community.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
some of our struggles along the way were related to a pretty tough competition in the industry and a struggling economy, trying to keep a relatively affordable ticket price for better entertainment, and hiring and retaining professional, efficient, and friendly staff.

1. We are the best Martini Bar in San Diego (hence the name) with over 150 martinis on the menu.
2. We are the premier supper club/cabaret in southern California.
3. We are the most proud of our way of providing live world class entertainment in a casual, friendly environment.
4. What sets us apart from others is the whole package (great food, great drinks, great entertainment) in one location, one experience.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We do not believe in luck. We both came from simple families and backgrounds and we both believe that only hard work and perseverance will make you achieve whatever your dream is.
