Meet Doug Brady of Brady Performance in North County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Doug Brady.

Thanks for sharing your story with us, Doug. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
As a little boy, I used to play football with my older brother and his friends, and the harder they hit me, the more I wanted to play.  I have loved the game of football for as long as I can remember.

My older brother Cristian and I had a bond when it came to football, and thankful he was older so I could learn to be mentally tough. After a few years of playing as a teenager, the quarterback position became my passion. And since then, I have devoted much of my life to the game of football- to developing my skills, developing my ‘football IQ”, and coaching other players. I was an All-Palomar League selection at Quarterback for the Poway Titans. In college, I was a Division 1 quarterback, New Mexico State University, amongst stops at Junior College (Juco); San Diego Mesa, and Division 3; Menlo College. Since then, I have moved around a lot to follow my passion for coaching football. My coaching stops took me from High School to Juco to D 1, D2, and NAIA. I coached in Missouri, twice, Illinois, Colorado, and in California. After all of my moving, I finally settled back in my hometown of San Diego. I shifted to a sales position selling software to commercial subcontractors. As recent as this January, I have been offered jobs to coach Quarterbacks at the collegiate level, but I don’t plan on leaving San Diego because of my wonderful girlfriend, Alisa, and her three beautiful children; Max, Tashi, and Gavin(GT).

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have had no shortage of struggles. I have lost my temper and even lost a job where I handled a lot of responsibility as the Offensive Coordinator at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri. I have regrets for how I treated others there. I have regrets for how I have treated others at other places, including Westview High in San Diego. I have left relationships to pursue my career, and I have made decisions that I later regretted. I try to embrace those mistakes because they are part of my story and became a better person for it. I am on a constant path to self-improvement, and because I am committed to my personal growth, I can help others in their growth. Learning to play football is not just about a sport. It is about overcoming obstacles. It is about learning to move on from a mistake- whether it’s on the field or off. It’s about taking responsibility for your actions and about being a good team player. When I work with athletes, I address not just the physicality of football but the mental and emotional aspects of the game. Learning to manage intense emotions is an integral part of being a great player. Constructive communication with your team during critical and non-critical moments is also an essential part of the game. My mission is to make football athletes better people in life as well as perform at a high level on the field.

Please tell us about Brady Performance.
I started Brady Performance because I have a passion for the game of football. As of right now, our focus is on two positions: Quarterbacks and Receivers. Nakoa Mcelrath is our Receiver Coach, and he does a great job of sharing his knowledge, his wisdom through struggles, and his love for life to the players. I incorporate football IQ, athletic performance, and academic advisement in my training programs. As a prior college admissions counselor and a previous university football coach, I can help athletes prepare for a career in football. For those athletes who don’t pursue football as a career, I believe I can make a positive impact on their lives. The lessons learned on the field can help young men and women with their drive, focus, confidence, and poise. These skills are crucial to be successful in life. There are plenty of football coaching businesses with very qualified people offering their services. I am friends with most of my competition. My goal is not to be considered a Quarterback “Guru.” My goal is to teach quarterbacks, receivers, and any other player or coach to leverage the game of football for every area of life. I started Brady Performance in 2020 right before the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the entire globe, so I’m providing web-based training sessions where I take Quarterbacks through football IQ and film study. Football is not just a game for me but a vehicle to teach life lessons.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Being a 2010 OVC conference champion while at Southeast Missouri State University where I coached the quarterbacks. That year marked our first conference title as a Division 1 program. It was also the first time SEMO reached the FCS playoffs.
