Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Bek Jarzombek.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am the owner of Giddy Up Chiropractic, an equestrian rider, and Doctor of Chiropractic for horses, riders, dogs, cats, livestock, and exotic animals. My primary specialty is horses and riders. I’ve been riding and competitively showing horses since childhood. The combination of me being a rider and chiropractor gives my work an elite level of expertise in the equestrian and horse-racing industries. Additionally, being a woman and millennial adds zest and uniqueness to my niche line of work.
Chiropractic ensures that nervous system health of the human or animal is maximized to 100% capacity. This includes the brain, spinal cord, and spinal nerves which give neurological instructions to all other systems in the body. Because of these principles, My work is known for amplifying athletic performance, preventing injuries, and reducing healing & recovery time for two-legged and four-legged members of the team.
My love of horses was sparked as a little girl. I always had a fascination with anything that had the ability to go fast. My father always noted my love of speed and gave me the nickname, Lightning. My first horse growing up was even named Flash of Magic. Hence, the phrase and name “Giddy Up” became very fitting and has been incorporated throughout my professional career. Through eight years of undergraduate and chiropractic schooling, I always found a way to stay in the saddle.
During my undergraduate studies, I rode on the equestrian team, served as president of the team for two terms, and was a national qualifier for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. My first personal chiropractic experience was at age 12. I was thrown from her horse, stepped on in multiple locations, and severely injured. My posture was steadily creeping into a forward posture, compressing my diaphragm and ribcage, causing breath problems.
No one had answers until my mother took me to a chiropractor. The doctor’s examination revealed areas of the spine that had been compromised by the accident, resulting in nerve health dysfunction. After a series of corrective visits over time, my posture began to improve, breathing regulated, and I regained strength, speed, agility, and stamina. I stayed under consistent chiropractic care until my family moved and had my second encounter with chiropractic almost ten years later.
At age 23, I had recently finished my undergraduate studies in Virginia and moved to California to prep for medical school. My sister, Sarah, introduced me to a chiropractor in San Diego who had helped resolve her chronic exercise asthma. At the time, I had yet to have a regular menstrual cycle. In fact, by age 17, I had yet to have a cycle at all and had been prescribed birth control to regulate my hormones. The root of the problem had never been identified.
Yet again, the chiropractor had the answer. Come to find out, the original riding accident that had occurred ten years prior, had lingering effects and began to compromise my reproductive health. The impact of the trauma had compromised my low back and pelvic nerves that supply the reproductive organs. The symptoms took many years later to manifest, however, the trauma occurred exactly during the timeframe a young woman enters puberty. After consistent chiropractic care, my cycle regulated without the help of a prescription medication and is normal to this day.
After having two significant success stories with chiropractic, I decided to re-arrange my career plans to attend chiropractic school, instead of medical school. In addition to my human licensure, I have completed an additional animal chiropractic specialty through the American Chiropractic Certification Commission (ACCC) of the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA); recognized as the world leader in animal chiropractic. This certification grants that I have met specific standards of knowledge and clinical competency within the chiropractic and veterinarian professions.
I graduated from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology: Sport & Recreation Management with a business minor. I graduated from Life Chiropractic College West in Hayward, California with a Doctor of Chiropractic where I received the clinical excellence award for my graduating class. I initially worked as an associate doctor in Washington State and started my own chiropractic business within the first of practice. Thus, Giddy Up Chiropractic was born.
Giddy Up Chiropractic provides mobile concierge care for humans and animals in the Greater San Diego area. I do travel outside of that area for select clientele and events. Thank you to all of my patients, veterinarians, farriers, trainers, riders, and other connections. It is a blessing to have the opportunity to serve you.
The Giddy Up motto is: “Life Without A Hitch.” Let’s do that.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Giddy Up Chiropractic took off fast! No pun intended. The name says it all->in all facets of my business and life. I truly think you can have it all: a successful business and personal life. But it’s a choice. As a doctor, you learn to make your patients your priority.
I am learning that my health must come first. Then my family. Then my patients. That is the formula for everyone to receive the best care. My family and friends must never be neglected. “It is not good for man to be alone.” I’m the kind of warrior woman that will work until I am bleeding… and still continue on. One must know when to rest and refresh.
My job takes a tremendous amount of physical and mental capacity, and has historically been known as a “man’s job.” There is no time for dilly dally when working on 1200 lb animals. All it takes is a split second for someone to get severely injured. This is the reason patients often have to wait 1 week or 2 weeks if they are not already on my schedule. I am all about safety and quality over quantity.
However, if it’s an emergency, I do my best to get that patient on my schedule. This also poses the thought that I will one day need to hire additional doctors. I only have 2 hands, there are many patients to serve, and there are only so many hours in a day.
The most common question I get… in a roundabout way is… you’re such a small woman… how do you adjust a horse? I am asked this question so routinely that it could be easy to let it get to my head. But I laugh and reply, “Dynamite comes in small packages… end of story. If you want the scientific answer: it’s the law of physics: Force = Mass X Acceleration. I don’t weigh a lot but I’m lightning fast.
As a successful businesswoman, getting distracted can be easy. There are lots of opportunities and people that want your attention and expertise. You quickly learn there are only so many hours in a day so you must be selective in the use of your time. Staying focused and keeping things very simple is the key being on the right course and the race you are intended to be running. Life will always throw things at you… good and bad. It’s your choice to design your life. No else can do that for you.
Please tell us about Giddy Up Chiropractic.
I am most proud of raising the standard of chiropractic and my patients’ testimonials. My work rarely deviates from the diagnosis and correction of spinal subluxations. This is not a “whack, crack, and pop session.” Every patient, two legged or four legged is first analyzed and examined. After that, the chiropractic adjustment process begins.
There is a high degree of specificity, clarity, and effectiveness to my work. I believe that is what makes me different. I do not try to be a “one stop shop”. There is no possible way you can be a jack of all trades. I’d rather be a master of one, than none. I’ve made the choice to make the chiropractic adjustment my vehicle for healing.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
As hard it might seem, there is nothing I would do differently. I believe I am doing exactly what I was put on this earth to do…. at this time. I’m sure my role and impact as Dr. Bek will continue to evolve over time.
