Meet Dr. Jocelyn Joy of Joy Acupuncture Health Centre in Bankers Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jocelyn Joy.

Dr. Joy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my practice right after I got my license to practice acupuncture in May of 2002. I rented a room in an established acupuncture office in Hillcrest two days a week while I built my business. Eventually I had enough patients to rent the room 4 days a week. It was then I decided it was time to get my own office.

I found a beautiful office in Bankers Hill, and have been here for about 12 years. My practice has expanded and in addition to working at the Bankers Hill location I now treat people out of a chiropractic office in Clairemont Mesa 2 afternoons a week.

I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to help my patients, it is very gratifying work.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with anything in life it has not been a smooth road. I struggled in the beginning trying to establish myself, and it took a while to get my schedule full. I am somewhat of an introvert and I made myself go to networking groups in order to meet other business owners and refer to one another. That was not easy for me. I think I was actually pretty terrible at it, but I did grow my business and still do business with several people I met at those groups.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Since acupuncture is so good at treating pain, that is a lot of what I do; low back pain, sciatica, neck pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, tennis elbow, hand and wrist pain, I treat it all.

My passion though is to help Oncology patients get through treatment with minimal disruption to their lives and plenty of energy, great appetite, positive outlook, and hope for the future. I have special training from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center on treating oncology patients with acupuncture, so I know how to treat this population safely and effectively.

I am most proud of the fact that my business has survived these 15 years, I have worked hard to learn how to be a better business owner as well as hone my practitioner skills. I even went back to school and got my doctorate in 2015!

Although my treatment skills are advanced, I feel the personal caring I provide for my patients’ sets me apart. I am always checking in with my patients while they are being treated and take care to make sure they are very comfortable and warm or cool enough. It is very uncomfortable to be too cold or hot when you can’t move around!

What were you like growing up?
I was very shy as a young girl, painfully so. Social situations were very difficult to be in, I rarely knew what to say. But one-on-one I was great! I think those traits come in handy in my profession, as I spend a lot of time getting to know my patients, sometimes on a very personal level as I deal with their health.
