Meet Dr. Leah Helin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Leah Helin.

Dr. Helin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Just as most people whom find themselves in the healthcare industry I wanted to help people. Contrary to where most drive this inspiration for me it was not originally the whole body but the smile. From a young age, I thought when people were smiling it meant they were happy and healthy. That meant if I wanted to help someone feel good the quickest path to that would be to make sure their smile looked good, thus I dreamed about being a Dentist, which, later on, became Specializing in Orthodontics, not Chiropractic.

I spent hours in the Dental profession, working at clinics, offices, shadowing everything from Pediatric Dentists to Orthodontistry. And, I loved it. I was even in a pre-Dental program through college. It was not till I was doing Dental school interviews, as a college graduate with a long pre-planned Dental road ahead of me that an old roommate shocked me into my own reality. I did NOT want to work in a hole that’s only 50MM in diameter.

I had always been an athlete, a coach and fitness enthusiast plus with my Biology and pre-Dental background, Chiropractic seemed meant to be. Now here I am. I practice in Encinitas specializing in Active care, the treatment of the whole body and how it moves. It’s my belief everyone is an athlete of some sort from the couch-lete to the elite athlete. Thus my treatment style was based on emphasis in extremity, muscle work and movement care.

We all MOVE our bodies, hopefully, thousands of times a day, so to move at your optimal potential does not just feel good but encourages more movement, more sport, optimal health and an overall greater well-being. Working together we can find the best way to improve the health of every person in the community.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
“A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor”. We all have our struggles. Struggles will come and go throughout our entire profession and lifetime. For me, its the understanding with the rest of the medical industry as well as our community about the Chiropractic profession. Chiropractic is not just “cracking” the spine but an extremely in-depth knowledge and understanding of the musculoskeletal and nervous system of the body. The Chiropractic profession is ever evolving specializing in so much more, such as soft tissue injuries, sports care, rehabilitation and nutrition. We treat hands, feet and even headaches!

On the individual level, the battle is teaching that no Chiropractor is the same. There truly is a Doctor who is meant to resonate which each person. The stories of bad experiences a patient has had which leaves them swearing off natural healthcare are so frustrating to me! Find your partner in health whom will work best with your needs and is there to tune up your body when you need that helping hand.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Dr. Leah Helin, DC – what should we know?
Dr. Leah Helin, D.C. is an Active Care therapy clinic. What the means is we look at movement or the inhibited movement of an area to help with the ailment. While pain or symptoms may be felt in one location we address the entire body and chain. Every treatment involves a quick exam, diagnosis, soft tissue and muscle work as well as the chiropractic adjustment. What sets us apart is this multi-level and individualized approach to chiropractic care.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
The Encinitas and San Diego community deserves credit for the trust and support they have shown our clinic. I would not be able to do what I do without the trust in my skills as a practitioner and the collaboration of care with the patient.
