Today we’d like to introduce you to Drew Bandish.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Award winning San Diego watercolor artist and instructor, Drew Bandish, is frequently called upon to demonstrate art methods, conduct workshops and serve as juror for art exhibitions throughout San Diego County. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Painting & Printmaking, and his teaching credential from San Diego State University.
Drew teaches popular art classes in all media through Grossmont Adult Education and MiraCosta College Community Education programs. Awarded Outstanding Instructor by students and staff, since 1987, he has shared artful insights, helping adult learners gain more pleasure, confidence and skill at drawing and painting.
A lifelong learner himself, Drew appreciates that teaching, demonstrating techniques and preparing lessons has accelerated his own art skills and enhanced his visual perception and creativity. He enjoys interpreting all manner of subjects: landscapes, portraits, animals, flowers, from observation, memory and imagination.
Please tell us about your art.
I am an artist who teaches drawing & painting to interested adults, every week. I design a syllabus of several two-week lessons and embrace the subject matter. Inspiration flows from focus and acceptance as I encounter related visual material and parallel concepts. Working from plein air, imagination and photos, I have grown my ability to express my own inner vision while helping others share the process. When we discover our own effective, creative approach we can apply it to all subject matter. I enjoy interpreting landscapes, animals, people, flowers, even abstracts.
I suppose I am best known for my watercolor paintings but I like to point out that drawing skills are fundamental. I also paint with acrylics and pastels, and have experience with oils and printmaking, as well. The very process of making art releases creativity and individuality.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Look. Think. Paint. Make regular time for creative expression – either in a class or for yourself. Brush mileage is important.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?

I belong to local art organizations and I participate in juried art exhibitions. San Diego Watercolor Society and Foothills Art Association both have club galleries and host monthly shows, events and receptions.
You can poke through the ART CLASSES menu item on my website to access descriptions of my art class programs and enrollment portals.
The annual Plein Air Convention & Expo engaged me as faculty in 2017 and 2018 and I will be involved in 2019 in their San Francisco event. Also, in 2019, I will be among the dozen faculty painters at Kanuga Watermedia Workshops outside of Hendersonville, North Carolina, in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
