Meet Dulce McBride of Young Attitudes Salon in La Jolla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dulce McBride.

Dulce, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Born in Mexico City, I moved to the United States when I was four years old. Growing up as the daughter of a single immigrant mother instilled in me the importance of a strong work ethic and perseverance to keep growing. At the age of 19, after applying to a half dozen jobs, the only call back I received was from a salon with a help wanted sign in their window. Little did I know what started out as a temporary summertime job was the beginning of my career. I was fortunate enough that hair found me.

What has always captivated me the most about the beauty industry is the opportunity to show clients the beauty that lies within themselves. My approach to hair has always been to support and enhance what already exists. Hair should not only match our lifestyles but should be an extension and expression of our true selves. For the past 16 years, I have exclusively worked with Aveda; a company that has remained cruelty-free and been a pioneer in holistic beauty, environmental responsibility, and social responsibility. Young Attitudes Salon in La Jolla is my current Aveda home.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with many new things, there was a big learning curve. Understanding various hair texture, density, chemistry, client expectations, and the desire to make my clients happy were the building blocks for many lessons. The service industry is a place where instant gratification comes quickly and with it, the insatiable desire to keep wanting to make people happy. What started off as a desire to cultivate my skills quickly began to affect my work and life balance, leading to neglect of myself and those around me. I knew this had to change.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I decided to join the Young Attitudes team not only to hone in on my craft but to have the freedom to make time for myself. Having a healthy work/life balance helped to reinforce the importance of understanding and meeting my needs. Prioritizing my own emotional, mental, and physical needs has invigorated my career, taking it to the next level.

I love creating looks of depth and movement that can be “lived” in, specializing in dimensional natural color. Pairing each client’s hair with their lifestyle, maintenance capability, and customizing a look specific to them is something I enjoy. I choose to work exclusively with Aveda products to ensure the best ingredients, sourcing, and environmental responsibility, as well partner with a beauty company that shares the same beliefs and lifestyle as I do.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
As salons have been given the green light to reopen, I am excited to be back behind the chair! The beauty industry has faced many hurdles amidst the hardships that have come with COVID-19. As for Young Attitudes, we’ve endured being closed for six months. Others, sadly, had to permanently shut their doors. For now, I’m simply happy and grateful to be back doing what I love – empowering people through beauty!
