Today we’d like to introduce you to Avey Bey.
Avey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was always sick as a child. I grew up eating a lot of unhealthy and processed food. My family consumed meat, dairy, and sugar on a daily basis. As a result, I frequently suffered from constipation and digestive issues and had a heavy addiction to sugar! It was terrible!
When I was 16 years old, Candida invaded my body and yeast began to thrive in my digestive system. Aside from the physical illnesses, I also struggled with depression and anxiety while growing up. Everything changed for me when I gave birth to a daughter in 2012. As a 24-year old first-time mother, like most first time mothers, I really did know what to expect. However, I eventually decided that I did not want my daughter to grow up and have an unhealthy life similar to what I had with food.
I started to research on how to live a Plant-Based lifestyle. After coming across Dr. Sebi’s “Eat to Live” video, I immediately applied the practices to my own life. I am very thankful because eight years later, my family and I have grown, learned, evolved, and thrived as a unit by practicing and maintaining conscious eating habits.
Because I wanted to maintain my health and have conscious eating habits for myself, as well as for my children, I created Spelt Essentials Cookies. I literally could not find a Plant-Based cookie that my children could enjoy without the added sugars and preservatives. Most cookies in the stores say “vegan” but are packed with so many preservatives and chemicals. So I embarked on an endless journey to create a Plant-Based cookie that is not made with processed wheat and is soy-free, refined sugar-free, without the artificial flavors, red 40 dyes, preservatives and chemicals. Spelt Essentials Cookies is a Non-Traditional Cookie packed with essential flavors with ingredients that my toddler can pronounce!
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has been extremely tough! I had to constantly learn through experiences and of course, trial and error. Nothing was simple for me. Especially since I am the first in my family to embarked on this journey of being health conscious and defining what that meant to me. I have been criticized, labeled as crazy, weird and too healthy. I had to learn along the way through growing pains that I could not control people and what they chose to consume. I can only control myself and help those that are willing to listen and learn. That is why I stated that I had to define what being healthy meant to me because we are all different, with different views and perspectives in life. Today, I tell people, “Do not listen to everybody, listen to your body and find out what works well for you.”
That is why I often say, heal the body through knowledge and wisdom, eventually, when a person knows better, they will strive to do better. It has been a very humbling experience for me.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I Eat Plants is all about knowledge and wisdom! I enjoy educating and teaching the community about the benefits of living a Plant-Based lifestyle. To me, healing can be achieved by being more mindful with what we put in our bodies. It is important that people are educated and taught properly about going back to nature for our essential needs like in food, for healing to take place. We offer Plant-Based cooking classes and personal grocery shopping to teach the people in San Diego how to live healthier lives because when a body is Dis-eased, it will not heal itself properly, so we want people to THRIVE while they are alive!
Those who are interested in Plant-Based nutrition have no clue where to begin. Most people who decide to transition from meat, dairy, and refined sugars have a very hard time on figuring out what to eat and how to properly prepare Plant-Based foods. This is where I come in to help and educate. This is where I apply all of my years of endless researching, my experiences and my growing pains to help make the transition smooth and convenient for those who are in need.
“Don’t know what store to drive to? What to know what stores carry Alkaline foods in San Diego?
What to know how to shop on a Plant-Based budget?”
I am very committed to educating clients about a Plant-Based lifestyle and how to choose healthier foods for themselves and family. I educate and grocery shop with you. Classes are very informative. I give our clients insight and tips while they take the first steps towards conscious eating and conscious shopping. Convenience and Comfort! I come to you and do a live demonstration personally in your home kitchen. Up close and personal, in-depth knowledge on Plant-Based foods and one on one time on how to prep and prepare your own meals.
One on One Grocery Trips is Knowledge-based. I assist clients on how to find everything that is needed for a Plant-Based lifestyle. This includes how to look at labels and ingredients, healthier alternatives to wheat, white rice, refined sugars and how to shop organic foods on a budget.
I feel that educating people and literally going to meet clients at grocery stores anytime, anywhere, is what sets me apart from others. I am very passionate when it comes to teaching and reaching out to the community. I see so many people judge people because of what they eat, but most people just lack the knowledge or was like me, raised in a family that consumed unhealthy food and was not educated on other alternatives. We live in a society that likes to label people and place them in a box. When this occurs, growth is hindered. I am here to break the cycle. I am here to help people grow, to learn and evolve. Heal the body through knowledge and wisdom!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love my city! I am so San Diego! San Diego to me definitely has a strong foundation. There is a lot of diversity and culture here! It is very liberal so there are a lot people that are open-minded and not bias. I have gotten a lot of support and positive feedback from local farmers and farmers markets about my business. People are willing to help if one is willing to learn. San Diego is legit!
