Armed with a BA in Sociology, with a minor in applied psychology, from UC Santa Barbara and a Masters of Science In Organizational Leadership and Business Innovation from UWLA, Ebony’s journey toward becoming a beacon of empowerment for individuals with disabilities began.
Her academic foundation laid the groundwork for a career defined by compassion, innovation, and unwavering dedication. Ebony’s commitment to understanding the intersectionality of social dynamics and psychological well-being propelled her to pursue a Masters in Business/Innovation and Organizational Leadership, further honing her ability to effect systemic change.
For the past decade, Ebony has been a steadfast advocate for individuals with disabilities, holding various influential positions within the sector. Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting Self Determined Futures LLC has been an incredible journey, but like most startups, the road hasn’t been entirely smooth. Our mission to empower neurodivergent individuals has always been at the heart of everything we do, and while the vision is clear, translating that into action has presented challenges.
One of the primary struggles we faced early on was raising awareness and understanding of neurodivergence within the broader community. There are still misconceptions about what it means to be neurodivergent, and part of our work has involved educating stakeholders, partners, and even potential clients about the strengths and potential of this community.
Additionally, securing funding was another hurdle. As a new organization, we had to demonstrate our impact and value to funders who were unfamiliar with our approach. Developing comprehensive, person-centered programs that stand out in a crowded field required meticulous planning, collaboration, and creativity.
We also encountered challenges in building a network of partners and resources that align with our mission. Whether it’s identifying employers who are open to inclusive hiring practices or connecting with housing services that accommodate the unique needs of neurodivergent individuals, finding the right collaborators took time and effort.
Despite these obstacles, our team’s passion and the support of the neurodivergent community have been our driving force. Each success story and positive impact we’ve made reaffirms our purpose and motivates us to continue breaking barriers. The road may not have been easy, but the rewards of seeing individuals achieve their goals and live fulfilling, self-determined lives have made every challenge worthwhile.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was resilient, innovative, and a catalyst for change. I always advocated for those who were unable to advocate for themselves. I have always had the heart and desire to help others.
