Today we’d like to introduce you to Eddie Sakatani.
Eddie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am Setsuko Sakatani, or as most people call me, Eddie. I am 21 years old, originally from La Paz, Mexico, but moved to San Diego almost 11 years ago. My interest in makeup began in High School. I started doing my friends’ makeup for proms, homecomings, graduations and quinceañeras. Everybody loved my work; therefore I decided to enroll in beauty school right out of high school. It was very hard for my parents and my teachers to come around since I earned very good grades throughout high school and was accepted to a couple universities. However, the thought of going to college didn’t excite me.
After beauty school, I was fortunate enough to find a job right away. I joined a beauty team, specializing in the bridal industry here in San Diego. After learning so much from them, and joining other teams, I decided to come out with my own website and begin my own journey. It has been so exciting to come out with my own style of bridal makeup and hair. There are so many talented artists out there and I’ve been so blessed to learn from the best.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The hardest obstacle thus far would be when I first moved to the US. I had no knowledge of the English language and it was very hard to go to school everyday and not being able to understand what my teacher was saying. Luckily, I had my twin sister with me, which helped a ton! We gave each other the confidence we needed. Through the help from other students and teachers, I was able to become fluent in just one year. It has been the hardest and greatest accomplishment, apart from becoming a makeup artist.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Eddie’s Beauty Touch story. Tell us more about the business.
Eddie’s Beauty Touch is a makeup and hair team specializing in the bridal industry. Here in San Diego, we have such a rich bridal industry and since I’ve worked in it, I’ve learned so much. I would describe my style as natural yet sophisticated. Most women want to look like themselves yet feel this extra sort of confidence, an extra touch to make them stand out even more!
I feel what sets me apart the most would be the ability to work with Asian eyes. As a Japanese girl from Mexico, I can relate to everyone who’s had their makeup done and has come out looking like a whole different person. There are different techniques that need to be implemented towards Asian eyes because we have such unique eye shapes. I feel like that is also what makes me the proudest. I love it when girls get excited about how their makeup turned out. It’s honestly priceless.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am not very superstitious. I do believe in “everything happens for a reason,” which has played a huge role in how I see failures. I wouldn’t call them failures but more like obstacles. If something didn’t work out in my life, I see it as a learning experience and take a look at how and why it didn’t come out the way I want it. I then apply it to whatever I’m doing next.
