Today we’d like to introduce you to Eddy Corral
Hi Eddy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born at an early age in Redwood City California, back in the 80’s when the universe meant something. I was always a creative and can trace some of my drawings as far back as three years old. My parents, teachers and friends always nurtured and encouraged my art work and creativity. In the early 2000’s I decided to move to San Diego and attend the now defunct Art Institute of CA and graduated with a degree in Media Arts and Animation. The creative energy there was amazing and I discovered a new found love for collaborating with other artists. Since then I’ve dabbled in music production, writing, video, photography, motion graphics and any other creative outlet available to me
However, after college I joined the workforce in an unrelated field because I was broke and Only Fans didn’t exist yet. For about 8 years or so, I did once in a blue moon freelance gigs or stuff to put on my cool Myspace/Facebook page, but I didn’t really put myself out there. Nor did I feel really inspired to create too often. In 2015 a friend and I attended the very first Sketch Party at The Whistle Stop in South Park. It was amazing! The creative energy from drunk artists like me brought me back to my Art Institute days. I was again inspired to draw and paint a lot more again. Not long after that, I started making my own pins, patches, coloring books, car fresheners, and any other kind of knick knacks, and started looking for makers markets and pop ups to sell my art and merch at. It started off pretty slow. I sold one patch at my first pop up. But I told myself it wasn’t about the money. It was about how much more alive I feel when I’m creating/ designing and collaborating. My plan was to keep it going and give my art to the universe and see what it gives back. Since that bumpy start, I’ve been blessed with designing beer labels for big breweries, designing hats (I LOVE hats) with local companies, and having my art up in living rooms, ice cream shops, bars and other establishments across the US. I guess it’s safe to say that the universe gave back to me…and it means something again.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It most definitely has not been a smooth road. There were times I spent a lot of money to participate in an event only to come out empty handed. Also the pandemic definitely hurt small markets and pop ups. But Once I found my niche, things changed a bit and I’m glad I stuck with it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I think I’m mostly known for my ice cream/pop culture themed art prints that I sell at pop ups/conventions/markets. It started with Batman and Joker on an ice cream cone and snowballed into a niche I wasn’t expecting to be associated with. Who doesn’t like ice cream? And if it has a fan base, I’m trying to put it on a cone.
In a different circle, I’m known for my hat designs. I’ve done work with The Clinkroom which is a crowd sourcing New Era fitted hat brand. I also make my own hats which I sell online or in person and designing hats for some of my favorite local bars like Bottle Rocket in East Village.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What’s not to like about San Diego. It’s got everything and it’s all give or take 20 minutes away! The beach? 20 mins. Mexico? 20 mins. Casino? 20 mins.
The thing I probably like the least are the roads. Definitely not built for heavy rain out here.
