Meet Edward Villanueva and Gilbert Melendez of Post Tropic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edward Villanueva and Gilbert Melendez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Edward and Gilbert. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Well, for us it all started in middle school, 2005 or something of that sort. Gilbert and I (Edward) have always been in bands together since middle school. Of course, most of these bands never got past the dad’s garage phase. Now fast forward to our early 20s, we both went our ways and joined other groups.

Unfortunately, all the bands we’ve been in were pretty stagnant. We just couldn’t find what we were looking for. Then out of the blue, we’ve both got into the same style of music randomly! It was like fate! I (Edward) stumbled across some demos Gilbert had online.

I was impressed and shot him a message saying, “Let’s start a band.” So far we’ve been on many adventures and met so many amazing people. We’ve played great shows and bad ones but loved every moment of it.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We don’t think the road has ever been smoothed. We’ve come across many difficulties such as playing a really bad show or having horrific writer’s block, but we think that’s what makes being in a band great. Something worth doing in life shouldn’t be easy. Being able to overcome challenges and finding yourself grow not just as a band but as a person is totally worth it.

Please tell us about Post Tropic.
Post Tropic right now stands as a two piece. Our genre is Postpunk/coldwave. Most of our operations live is machine driven. Edward plays guitar and controls the MPC. Gilbert is the frontman of the group.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I think both of our favorite memory as a child is just getting into music and discovering new bands that millions have heard of already.
