Meet Elina Ferguson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elina Ferguson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Elina. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in Finland. Music and arts have always been my passion and a big part of my life. I’ve played the violin since I was a little girl. I even went to college for music but changed my career path for hair that I secretly always wanted to do. That was the best decision I ever made!

I started doing hair in 2005. I had a chance to work at the top salons in Helsinki and attend several color specialists and cutting classes. I also did lots of styling for fashion shows and weddings. After meeting my husband I moved to San Diego and I’ve been living here for the past 9 years. I worked at one of the biggest salons in downtown San Diego for over 7 years but recently started as an independent stylist at Santo Tomas Collective located in Old Town San Diego. I’m very grateful for all the people I’ve met throughout these years and what they’re all taught me to become a beautiful hairstylist.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I guess I have to say it’s been a fairly smooth road. Life always throws obstacles on your way but when you try your best, have a good attitude and work hard every day you can succeed! Moving to the States was a little scary at first but exciting at the same time. I think my job is the best I can do this anywhere in the world! It’s been wonderful so far.

Please tell us about your work.
I love to do all kinds of color and cutting, women’s and men’s hair. I do specialize in blondes and dimensional/natural color. I love to create a seamless blend no matter what the color is. My goal has always been quality over quantity. Sometimes it means I see fewer clients per day but I can make sure I’m happy and the client is happy in the end. There’s no feeling of rushing.

Also, I would say education and staying on top of the trends are very important. That always keeps me inspired too. I’m constantly watching hair related videos and taking classes. I also have such a talented group of stylists working around me and we love to share our knowledge!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
After I made a big change and started as an independent stylist! When you’re in charge of your own business it can be stressful and scary. What if you can’t do it. What if you fail. You go through all those thoughts in your head. I have to give big thanks to all of my clients who have been so supportive. Without them, this all wouldn’t be possible!
