Meet Emily Hester of JoJo’s Creamery in Encinitas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Hester.

Thanks for sharing your story with us, Emily. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
My Mom and I opened JoJo’s Creamery in March 2017 in Encinitas.

From the very beginning, we envisioned JoJo’s to be a place where people of all ages could gather and enjoy a delicious scoop of ice cream. We have always been committed to making our ice cream from scratch with organic dairy and offering a free small chocolate chip cookie with each ice cream.

We are also passionate about providing job training and mentoring to young adults who have overcome significant obstacles in their life and teenagers entering the workforce for the first time.

We have an incredible team that has helped grow JoJo’s over the last 2-3 years. We even have a few staff members who have been with us since the beginning and are working their third summer at JoJo’s!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think every business faces unanticipated challenges along the way, and our business is no exception. We have had our fair share of challenges ranging from break-ins to power outages and everything in between, but we have always felt supported by the local Encinitas community. We are grateful we get to make ice cream a few blocks from the beach in a town we love.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with JoJo’s Creamery – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We make all our ice cream, chocolate chip cookies, waffle cones, and sauces from scratch. We even make most of our ice cream add-ins from scratch — brownies, cookie dough, honeycomb, toffee, fudge, caramel, and more are all made right in our shop.

We make all of our traditional ice cream with organic Straus Family Creamery dairy from happy, pasture-raised cows. We also have four vegan flavors that we make with organic coconut milk, organic coconut cream, and organic housemade cashew milk.

We work hard to make sure each flavor is as creamy as possible, intense in flavor, and has just the right amount of sugar. We do not use corn syrup, stabilizers, fillers, artificial flavorings, or food colorings, and we never use ingredients you can’t pronounce. For example, we make our Vanilla Bean with organic milk, organic cream, organic egg yolks, organic cane sugar, local raw honey, vanilla beans, vanilla extract, and salt. That’s it!

Every single ice cream comes with a free chocolate chip cookie that we make with organic browned butter, organic housemade toffee, a dollop of organic Greek yogurt, and Guittard chocolate chips.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We love working with other local businesses and hope to collaborate with more in this upcoming year. We also participate in a lot of community fundraising events for San Diego non-profits and local public schools and plan to continue partnering with those organizations in the future.

We donated 1,000 free scoops to the Encinitas and Cardiff public libraries for their 2019 summer reading programs, so we hope to see lots of local kids swing by JoJo’s this summer!
