Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Wallace.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve been a graphic designer for 15 years. A couple things lead me down the path of starting my own candle business. For starters, I had a calling to create something tangible and missed working with my hands. Second, I’m obsessed with fragrance and candles and have a serious love for home goods and interior styling. Candle making really satisfies both those areas.
Please tell us about your art.
I hand make small batch candles out of a cozy, surf-side nest in La Jolla that I share with my husband and dog. Little Point Candle Company is inspired by California’s beach and board culture. I blend fragrance, develop scent names and design the packaging.
I’m a California native and I’ve lived all over our great state. We truly sit at the nexus of surf/snow culture and my fragrance evokes that lifestyle. I use an all-natural coconut wax base for its superior properties and premium oils that are people and pet safe.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
It’s pretty thrilling to be the captain of my own ship but like many creatives, I struggle with perfectionism and self-doubt. I probably had a hundred different logo and label designs before I realized I was stuck in a cycle and had so many things left to figure out on the business side. Choose a direction and get going. It wasn’t until we launched the site that I really started learning. Brands are not static things, give yourself the space to grow and evolve.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Currently, Little Point Candle Co. is primarily direct-to-consumer and we are working on ways to enhance that experience. For example, a sampling system that allows you to connect with the fragrance before you make a purchase. Visit shoplittlepoint.com or follow @shoplittlepoint on social for news and updates.
