Meet Emma and Ally of the Spooky Chicks & Horror Flicks Podcast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma and Ally, hosts of the horror movie podcast, Spooky Chicks & Horror Flicks.

Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Emma: I’ve been obsessed with horror for as long as I can remember—staying up too late watching “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”, binging slashers and 80’s horror classics like “Poltergeist” with my dad, and forcing my friends to watch weird horror movies with me. At some point, I realized my life was missing something creative and then I thought, Okay, what are two things I’m good at? Talking… and talking about horror movies. The idea for the Spooky Chicks & Horror Flicks podcast came from my love for all things spooky and the macabre, mixed with late-night conversations with Ally, my best friend, where we’d overanalyze every dumb decision a character made or argue about the best final girl. Eventually, I figured, why not turn this into a podcast? Now, we get to talk about horror all the time, connect with other fans, interview cool people in the industry—and, honestly, just drink wine (and White Claw) and yap together. We have so much fun doing these episodes, and I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else!

Ally: Emma literally called me up one day and was like, “So, we’re starting a horror podcast,” and she already had a whole-ass business plan ready to go. I had no choice but to say yes. I’ve always loved horror and all things spooky just like Emma. We wanted the podcast to feel like you’re just hanging out with friends, talking about scary movies, debating horror hot takes, and making space for all kinds of horror fans, whether you’re a die-hard or just getting into the genre. It’s been so fun watching the show grow, going to conventions, and getting to geek out over horror with people who love it as much as we do!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not gonna lie, podcasting has been a learning experience! We jumped in with a ton of excitement, but there was definitely a learning curve—figuring out recording setups, dealing with tech issues, and just getting comfortable behind the mic. It’s one thing to ramble about horror movies with your friends, but another to make it sound polished and engaging for an audience.

Luckily, we have The Producer (yes, that’s his official title), who has been with us from day one, making us sound like actual professionals. Without him, this podcast would probably be full of awkward pauses, chaotic tangents, and us saying “and so, yeah” way too many times.

Beyond the technical stuff, one of the biggest struggles has been balancing the podcast with our full-time jobs and personal lives. We love doing this, but life gets busy! Still, every time we sit down to record, we’re reminded why we started: because we love horror, we love talking about it, and we have so much fun doing this together.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Emma: By day, I work in digital marketing, which has definitely helped us grow Spooky Chicks & Horror Flicks into what it is today. I specialize in account management, client relationships, strategy, and helping brands connect with their audience—which has translated perfectly into building our podcast’s social media presence. One of the things I’m most proud of is how quickly we’ve built a community of horror fans who engage with us, share their thoughts, and get excited about the episodes we put out. We don’t just want to talk at people—we want to create fun and engaging conversations, and I think that’s what sets us apart.

Ally: And I work in event marketing, so I’m always keeping an eye on what’s happening in the industry—what’s trending, what’s getting people excited, and how to create experiences that stick with people. That’s been huge for the podcast, especially as we’ve started attending conventions, networking, and getting involved in the horror community beyond just recording episodes. We want Spooky Chicks & Horror Flicks to feel like more than just a podcast—it’s a space for horror fans to come together, whether they’re die-hard genre lovers or just getting into it. I think that mix of marketing know-how and genuine passion is what’s helped us grow so much already, and we’re just getting started!

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Emma: For me, it’s consistency. Whether it’s in digital marketing or podcasting, success doesn’t happen overnight—you have to show up, keep learning, and keep putting in the work. From the start, we committed to making Spooky Chicks & Horror Flicks something real, not just a “let’s try this and see what happens” project. We set a schedule, built a brand, and kept engaging with our audience. Even when life gets busy, we make it a priority because we love doing it, and I think that dedication is a huge part of why we’ve been able to grow so quickly.

Ally: For me, it’s adaptability. In event marketing, things change constantly. You have to be able to pivot, problem-solve, and stay ahead of trends. That mindset has been huge for the podcast, too. We’re always looking at what’s working, what’s not, and how we can evolve. Whether it’s trying new episode formats, jumping on horror trends, or figuring out how to improve our content, we don’t just stick to a formula, we’re always learning and adjusting. I think that flexibility, combined with our love for what we do, has been key to our success.
