Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Noble.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
It stems back from when I was young, I had a passion for drawing. I remember in 5th grade, one of my greatest accomplishments was when my drawing was used as our 5th grade promotion ceremony program cover. As time passed, I stopped drawing, but in high school, I was our public relations representative, and my job was making all of our pep rally and event posters. Fast forward to two years later, I was introduced by my cousin to calligraphy.
When I started doing calligraphy, I had no idea it would turn into something I could get paid to do and potentially do as a living. I have always had a passion for all things artistic and creative, but when I discovered lettering and calligraphy, I fell in love with it. It all started with volunteering at church and using my artistic and creative ideas to serve, but over time, God began opening door after door to more opportunities. Jesus has really blessed me with something I not only get to grow into a business, but He has also given me a gift I can use to point people back to Him. First and foremost, my creative abilities will always be used for His glory; anything and everything else that follows is just extra. I have so many dreams and things I want to pursue––being a calligraphy artist is just the dream I am chasing and pursuing right now. As for the name “Calligrapheri,” this came from the idea that I wanted my business to be something that was a part of me or relevant to who I am. My whole life, my family and friends have always called me Eri, which is a nickname coined by my older sister. So “calligrapher” + “Eri” became Calligrapheri.
Please tell us about your art.
As a calligraphy artist, I mainly work in decorative areas, such as weddings and event spaces and set up, and I work to make good decor great, with accents of calligraphy and hand-lettering. My favorite and most frequent projects are creating signs for weddings. Typically, my clients share their vision with me, show me photos for inspiration, and from there, the creative freedom is mine. I always give my clients the authority to request an exact style of calligraphy; however, most of the time, my clients trust me to design something that caters to my style of lettering––for every calligrapher has their own unique font. Making signs for weddings are my favorite projects because of the rewarding feeling that comes from the joy of my clients feel about their signs on their special day. As previously stated in my story, I will always use my creativity and artistic abilities to point back to God, the one who gave me such gifts. I also am constantly working to improve my calligraphy through the inspiration I get from other artists and the world around me.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
As an artist, I define success less by money and more by influence. I find more value in having a name in the network of creatives, especially in my current field, as well as in having a uniqueness or distinctiveness in my work to where people can see my work in a public space or on social media and immediately know that it is mine. With that being said, one quality I feel is essential to success as an artist is having that uniqueness in his or her work and having a boldness with new ideas and opportunities. Being successful requires an acceptance of failure, a willingness to keep going, and an understanding of different seasons, such that there are seasons for change, but there are also seasons for holding onto and growing a certain creative vision, etc.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work is most easily accessible via social media. I have an Instagram account as well as a website, and both display my artistic work, projects, and creative abilities to different extents. Two very public platforms that I have been given are at my current place of employment, The King’s Craft Coffee, and the Shoppes at Carlsbad. At King’s Craft, my boss has graciously allowed me to add accents of calligraphy in our store as well as has allowed me to sell my hand-lettered greeting cards in the shop. At the Shoppes at Carlsbad, I created chalk art that is displayed as a storefront for all mall customers to see. People can support me by kindly following me on social media as well as keeping my website as a reference.
