Meet Erica Yeawon Hwang of San Diego Philharmonic Orchestra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Yeawon Hwang.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Erica Yeawon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The music industry is very competitive and cutthroat, and we wanted to create an environment for musicians to play music for what it truly is while also reaching out to our community and introducing classical music to those who are not familiar with it. We started putting the orchestra together in March of 2017 and had a series of concerts throughout the summer. We have plans to continue presenting concerts in the winter and 2018 summer.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Some challenges have included communications, both within and outside of the orchestra. Another challenge is that because quite a few members of the orchestra are university and conservatory students that go to school outside of San Diego, most of our concerts are during breaks when most people are back home.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the San Diego Philharmonic Orchestra story. Tell us more about the business.
We create a welcoming environment for classical musicians and present free orchestra concerts throughout San Diego. We also work with chamber music as well as playing at senior homes and children’s hospitals. The three founders, Erica Hwang, Diego Guerra, and Michael Remish are proud of having made the orchestra a reality from what was initially only an idea. The San Diego Philharmonic is different in that we try to lessen competitive side of the music industry and create a truly collaborative atmosphere.

We are fortunate to have a community willing to invest in and listen to classical music.
