Meet Erin Brooke Hila of San Marcos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Brooke Hila

Hi Erin Brooke, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a disability activist and ambulatory wheelchair user, I have been in the spotlight multiple times. This translated to modeling when iZZY, an activewear small business needed disability representation for their upcoming closet. After this, my dear friend Therese Nguyen sent me a modeling workshop flyer held over the summer, hosted by Yvone Nguyen of Yvon’s Non-profit Modeling Agency. This boosted my connections with other models and photographers. After this experience, opportunities started to roll as I dove headfirst into commercial and fashion/glamour modeling. Since then, I have worked with over 10 amazingly talented photographers, been published in 10 fashion magazines, and collaborated with many MUAs, creative directors, and other models. My goal is to create a name for myself in the commercial and fashion modeling industry.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Modeling, although a passion of mine, is mentally challenging, which many might not realize. The modeling industry projects insecurities upon impressionable young people that can severely damage their sense of self. Although body image is a constant battle, I strive to keep my head up high. I am confident in myself and the quality of work I can produce, no matter what my measurements are. Although I am not 5’8 and of small frame, I believe my creativity and talent can change the way people see the fashion world.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am currently a student at California State University San Marcos and will graduate in Spring 2025. My major is Criminology & Justice Studies, and I hope to work in domestic violence shelters or another avenue in sociology. My disability activism on campus is an integral part of my identity. About 2 years ago I started the Equal Opportunity and Access Team to improve accessibility for the disabled. I have since won the Social Justice award, presented to PAT Jr., and have given a voice to the voiceless. Disability activism gives me a purpose; to serve the underserved and bring a fraction of justice into a world set against those with differences.

How do you define success?
Success, for me, is deeply rooted in the principles of inclusivity and making a lasting difference. It’s about breaking down barriers and reshaping societal perceptions of disabilities to create a world that embraces diversity and values every individual’s unique contribution. Success means fostering a culture of acceptance, where opportunities are equitable, and everyone, regardless of their abilities, feels empowered to thrive.

My vision of success isn’t confined to personal achievements—it’s about inspiring change that ripples outward, improving lives and opening minds. By advocating for inclusivity, I aim to leave a legacy that challenges outdated norms, uplifts marginalized voices, and creates a more compassionate, unified world.

This translates into modeling, as I believe this art form is for everyone, not just the stereotypical vision of a tall, slender, able-bodied person. Everyone can create beauty in their own way, and I hope to inspire those with differences to take a page out of my book; to be confident in themselves and the body they occupy.
