Today we’d like to introduce you to Esmeralda Gutierrez.
Esmeralda, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Ever since I can remember I have always loved everything & anything that had to do with beauty industry. As I got closed to finishing high school I knew I wanted to do something that I would be passionate about but most importantly something in where I could help others. At that moment I decided I wanted to be a nurse. Around that same time my school offered internships to students that would qualify. I applied an got it. After only one month into the internship I quickly found out that the medical field was not for me! Something I forgot to mentioned is that I have one sister that by this time was a licensed hairstylist. Of course, I was fighting with feelings of not wanting to be little sister that copied her big sister. But move forward 15yrs and I love that we can share this passion for hair and makeup.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Honesty, overall it has been pretty smooth. I am a strong believer that if something is meant for you and you are passionate about it, it will work for you. The struggles for me were building my confidence and creating my own style in this competitive industry. I’ve learned that there is no cutting corners when doing hair. Hard work definitely pays off.
Hair by Esmeralda – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Ten years ago I was strongly encouraged to become my own boss. Honestly best decision I have made in my career. I fell in love with my career all over. I specialize in color corrections and blonding. I love to turn dark hair girls to blonds. There is no greater satisfaction than watching my clients face reactions when they see their end results. It’s truly rewarding! I take pride in my work and I do everything I can to give my clients their hair goal. Like to be very honest with all my clients. So, during the week you will see me transforming hair at the shop. On weekends my sister and I do on site hair and makeup for any special event.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I will like to keep growing as a stylist. I would like to keep learning new trends and techniques. As for now I like where I’m at. As a mother of two I have the flexibility to have a perfect balance between being a hairstylist & a mommy. But in the near future I would like to own my own shop. Perhaps start a makeup/lash line with my sister as my business partner.
