Meet Fabiola Avila

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fabiola Avila.

Hi Fabiola, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up I couldn’t help but do facials, touch and play with hair, and paint nails- even my dog’s nails. Naturally, my first job had to be something relating to beauty. In high school, I began working at a kids’ hair salon as a receptionist. Next door was an eyebrow threading salon that was hiring and caught my attention. I applied and was soon hired. Immediately I was hooked on shaping, trimming, and caring for brows. Doing eyebrows every day and watching the hairstylist from behind the counter inspired me. A couple of years later that led me to become a licensed barber and cosmetologist. Due to the pandemic, the constant opening and closing of all salons was very frustrating. This frustration led me to quitting both jobs and focusing my time on improving the other skills I acquired at Bellus Academy. I began playing around with hair color, eyelash extensions, acrylic nails, fading haircuts, and hair removal. Surrounded by family, my guinea pigs were endless. As salons began to open back up, I was able to visit my wax lady once again. We began chatting about how she got her start and her typical day-to-day on the job as an esthetician. This is what gave direction to my job hunt. On the hunt, I found the home of the sweetest sting- Gingerly Wax. Otis, the half-tailed ginger-haired neighborhood cat, sold me instantly. If Otis wasn’t enough to sell me on Gingerly, the fact that my new boss’ name was Ginger certainly did. I joined the team and began my training with the holy grail of hair removal, sugar. My number one pick for Brazilians. I now not only chat my head off all day but educate and empower people of all shapes and sizes from all over the country! We learn about each other, and most importantly, they leave with the knowledge on how to take care of their skin pre as well as post-sugar/wax. I do my best to make such an experience of vulnerability to some as comfortable for them as possible. I’ve only been at Gingerly Wax for a little over a year now, but I don’t think I’ve ever felt more at home or more right about something. I have not only gained success in my career, but I have garnered multiple facets of knowledge that I am determined to share to every future client.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest struggle is picking up the whole technique! I practically had to forget everything I knew about wax in order to even begin the process of learning sugar. Application and removal procedure is the opposite of wax; I apply against the grain and remove with the grain of hair growth. The craziest part is that I’m doing it with my gloved hand! Holding all of the sugar at the balls of my fingertips and using a flick of the wrist to remove it. Definitely not easy, but a very rewarding skill to learn.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am known for specializing in sugaring Brazilians and waxing eyebrows. The services and experiences that I’m able to provide are what I’m the most proud of. Clients at Gingerly Wax appreciate how I am not only comforting and quick but thorough and efficient as well. I build connections with clients and remember them, from their friends and family to even their fur babies. My connections with clients are genuine and come from the heart. Getting waxed or sugared is not a “fun” experience, but at Gingerly Wax, we definitely try to make it as much of a breeze as we can!

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
My passion. My passion for what I do. How much I believe in sugar. My passion for learning, educating, empowering and comforting. If I didn’t love everything about what I do, I know I wouldn’t have the amount of success that I do right now. I love everything about work, sugaring clients because I get to talk them through the whole experience; not only am I distracting them but getting to know them and educating them.
