Today we’d like to introduce you to Farah Hurdle
Hi Farah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have been in the hairstyling world since 1999, which makes me ancient in this industry. I am still loving it and evolving with the times. I have had so many chapters in my career, but I am most excited about this one. After being a salon owner for 15 years in Little Italy, I have now focused my career on specializing in greyblending. The art of getting women out of a root touch up and blending their hair with highlights and lowlights have given me purpose again in this world of hair. After focusing on this specialty for the past 9 years now it has opened doors I never thought would. The amount of interest in greyblending has exploded since the pandemic. Women have reinvented themselves and decided what’s important to them and what’s not. The world is adapting and changing very quickly. I love it, there is so much to look forward to.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The hairstyling world can be challenging for sure. After working in all of the roles, student, receptionist, assistant, commission stylist, booth renter, salon owner and suite owner; I have experienced all of the things. The most challenging would be owning a salon during a pandemic and then trying to survive it afterwards. That part of the journey took the wind out of my sails for sure. So grateful to be past that!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
When I discovered the art of greyblending 17 years into my career there was no going back. I realized that this low maintenance way of blending the hair was easy for my clients to grow out softly and I could get more clients in my schedule. I really committed to it once I grabbed the Instagram @greyblending Using this platform promoted my love for blending grey hair and the new clients started messaging me weekly. Women were so grateful to find a stylist that would support them with their silver hairs and not shame them. After specializing in greyblending for 9 years now I have tailored my clientele. I am proud to say I have trained many stylists to do the same. The demand for greyblending hasn’t slowed down at all. My mission is to teach all stylists to help their clients embrace the grey when they are ready to. It’s been such and amazing journey.
And Grey hair doesn’t mean you’re old!!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I owe my success to my open mind and free thinking personality. I have never been put in a box. I have never wanted to follow the rules. I have always wanted to push the boundaries. I have always questioned the norm. I am artist to the core.
