Meet of Fish Pit in College area

Today we’d like to introduce you to .

, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in Ogden Utah. Worked in a traditional Japanese restaurant prepping and washing dishes. Fell in love with the industry. Came to San Diego to go to culinary school and worked at cafe japengo at the Hyatt. For some reason decided to move back to Utah to work and run sushi bars in park city. I opened a small catering company for private sushi parties for Sundance film festival, really awesome until the market went to shit. Decided to get the hell out of Utah and move back to San Diego. Opened Sabuku Sushi as executive chef in 2011 with Bob Pasela for almost 5 years. Then decided it was time for me to start my own thing, with the help from Lindsay Boyer, great friends and the whole boyer family and of course my family. We pieced together this cool little shack. Been a long stressful road but wouldn’t change it for the world.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not smooth ha ha, was hoping for a line out the door when we opened. If you build they will come bulshit. Super humbling and really made me work to get fish pit some what popular. It probably would of been a lot easier if I more prepared for the financial side of the business. I am a chef not an accountant but I had to figure out both. When people say you don’t make any money your first year they are seriously right ha ha.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Fish Pit – what should we know?
Fish pit specializes in top quality fresh fish. No freezer at all and personally pick out the best fish for the day. We make poke bowls, fish tacos, sushi and creative plates and apps. What sets us apart from other poke and sushi places is the love and quality of fish.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Lindsay Boyer my child’s mother played a huge part and gave up so much to make my dream a reality and forever greatful for her and her family. Atkinson family also a huge help in building fish pit. My mom and dad and bothers were a huge help as well.
