Today we’d like to introduce you to Flair Shay.
Flair, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 2013 I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer (Fibro Sarcoma). This process was a long, stressful and painful journey. Having beat this disease two times and avoiding a full left leg amputation, I knew that I wanted to be able to acknowledge those who I met and fought alongside me and honor those we lost before and after. Last year in 2019, I was playing with umbrellas and decided to try my shot with putting myself on one and my son on his. I LOVED how they came out.
I surprised my son with his and he said “Mom, you’re so Bougie”! I used mine for rain and shade and I would get so many compliments and inquiries. My son took his to school and the students and staff loved it! I started doing umbrellas for friends and family and that’s when The Bougie Brella was created! We hope in the near future to get into fundraising for many organizations and to set up at different support walks, parades, and local events.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Overall our road has been pretty smooth. We had a few bumps with making connections and ensuring we build a trusted brand. Typical start-up process but our products have clearly proved their own worth.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Bougie Brella story. Tell us more about the business.
The Bougie Brella is known for customized products. We started with umbrellas but now we have expanded to slides (sandals), luggage covers, wallets, tire covers, vehicle car seat covers, and windshield shades. I’m very proud of the fact that we have such a great relationship with our customers. I love when they tell us, “We trust you make it nice”. We truly believe in customer satisfaction and would never send out a product we have not inspected or feel is not of top quality.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe in God and he has guided every step we take in business.
