Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriela Cardona.
Hi Gabriela, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since I was a little kid, I remember seeing my grandmother paint. That always sparked some curiosity in me. Later on, around high school last year, I joined an analogue photography workshop in Ensenada, Mexico (my hometown). Since that moment, I completely fell in love with photography. During my college years, I studied Graphic Design, but I was always attending workshops or helping out other peers to learn about the photography world, which was my real interest in developing as a career.
I started freelancing as a photographer in the middle of my career and also co-founded Hausu Media with Sergio Valdez, a space focused on content creation, production, and film.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every business comes with different challenges, ups, and downs. Being partnered with someone who aligns with vision, values, and goals helps a lot in navigating difficult times. Some of the greatest challenges have been the extreme competition in my field, which often devalues rates. This is why it’s crucial to understand your own value and effort and never settle for less.
Collaboration is also a key ingredient in growing as a creative and nurturing your work as well as others. This is when magic happens in projects, especially in photoshoots or film productions, where everyone is contributing their expertise. As a result, you get the most wonderful outcomes.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a photographer and artist. In my creative practice, I work with mixed media and make use of old and new technologies, such as analogue photography, cyanotype, and AI.
My main focus in photography is portraiture and content creation. What I love about photography is how it leads you to amazing points of connection and allows you to get to know other people and practices. Since I started, it has always come with surprises and challenges, but this is what makes it interesting.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Always keep learning. I wouldn’t say I am at the most successful part of my career – yet – but something that has helped me along the way is never ceasing to be curious and learning new skills.
