Today we’d like to introduce you to Ghia Larkins.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ghia. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
My love for photography started at a young age. The first time my father gave me a Nikon 35mm film camera I fell in love with the process. I spent many hours with him in the darkroom watching our visions come to life. The smell of the processing , in the darkness with that single light , music or in pure silence. Such special memories.
Briefly, over the years I took photos, I was the one with the camera always, and when my children were at an age when I could take a few classes here and there my love for the craft was rekindled. A milestone in my life a few years ago made me realize what my true passion is, to follow what you love and I have been working toward that since.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, I don’t think that life in general is. The reality is some of us have had to struggle, or work a little harder for some of the things we want in life, it just makes it a little sweeter.
Really I am still on my way of figuring that all out, its all a learning process and I am proud to say I am learning constantly.
I am very happy to say that I have a great tribe of women , and loved ones that have been supportive and encouraging , will listen to my ideas and create with me , and I can’t thank them enough. They are there for me in the ups and downs and I keep moving forward.
Please tell us more about your work.
As a photographer, I have explored many different genres, and I enjoy making and explore creative art images. I particularly love to do portraiture. I am all about having people allowing themselves just to be.
My passion, of course, is shooting women, I feel that too often we don’t allow ourselves to be seen. I do offer makeup and hair options, and shoots usually are a few hours with wardrobe changes as fancy, stylized, natural. Or raw no makeup and real, just as they choose.
Its a ton of fun, a day full of laughter and really just feeling good about yourself. The main thing is I really am after catching that glimpse of someone that sometimes they don’t share with others, something true. We create magic together. (btw not leaving out the men, I do photograph them too, smiley face entered here)
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I don’t know if that has come yet. I have been in a few shows, done projects that I love, and have a few recognition’s.
I think what makes me proudest is when someone that has sat for me and my lens says to me that it is the best photo anyone has ever taken of them , when you bring emotions to the surface, when someone cries when they see their images. That has to be the proudest moment for me and it makes me feel like I must be doing something right – that gives me great joy to share what I see in someone with others.
