Meet Glenn Frey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Glenn Frey.

Glenn Frey

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My wife and I founded Black Mountain Landscape Design in 2009 when we were looking for a second act professionally. We were both in health care for 30+ years apiece and it was a greatly needed change. In 2022 my son Alex joined the business, which was a very welcome addition. Unfortunately in 2023 my wife Margee passed away, but my son and I are carrying on the business. I blows my mind when I think that 2024 is our 16th year of operation. I feel very fortunate to be doing something I enjoy so much.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has mostly been smooth sailing but there have been bumps in the road. We had to be resilient and have a plan b at times. Covid was challenging but technology had some of the answers with Zoom and other platforms. When things locked down in California, business slowed for us for about 30 days and then got busier than we had ever seen. There were times when we had a 3-5 month wait before we could get started on a particular design project. Clients were unbelievably understanding, and once we started, the process moved along quickly.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We create custom landscape designs based on the clients’ preferences and how they will utilize their outdoor space. We cover quite a diverse area of communities within San Diego County, all with unique settings. We meet with the clients to find out likes, dislikes, how they will use the space and how we can create a landscape while minimizing resources needed. We are very service based, which I think sets us apart. I always tell clients that I value their input during the entire design process. The more input from them, the happier they are with the end product.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My parents owned a greenhouse and flower shop in Viroqua, Wisconsin. The growing season was very short, unlike here in San Diego but every spring I could go into the greenhouse and select plants for the planting beds, and then plant. It was always fun and I never realized I would end up as a landscape designer. Another point to note is that I was in healthcare related professions from the early 1970s until we founded Black Mountain Landscape Design!
