Today we’d like to introduce you to Gloria Mohammad.
Hi Gloria, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have always loved playing baseball. From the day that I was born, I was at the field at my sisters games. As soon as I was old enough to join a team, my mom signed me up. I have played every season since! Not only is baseball so much fun, but the friends that I made are the best! I love playing with them on and off the field. Baseball is hard work. I am always working on hitting and fielding the ball. We practice multiple times a week. I have had amazing coaches that are willing to spend time teaching me and all the other kids at the field. This year I started She Rocks girls Flag Football. I’ve been playing since January. Flag Football has been so much fun!! It is constant movement on the field. My positions are usually running back or wide receiver. I have also been quarterback a few times. Having the ball and running trying to score a touchdown is an amazing feeling. I love it. My coaches have also been amazing and so encouraging. They have helped me learn about football and the skills needed to become great. Our She Rocks family is really awesome! whether it coaches, parents, or the girls (ages from 7-17) they are always encouraging each other; it’s really nice to see and hear. It makes me so happy.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Playing any sport is hard work and practice! Especially if you want to be great at it. I have always been the smallest (usually) on my teams. So sometimes I feel I need to push myself to work harder. For Baseball, I have to be faster, either getting on base quicker or swinging the bat faster. Football, most of the kids are taller than me, which makes catching the ball tough sometimes; the kids can reach the ball before me. Also when I try to block their catch, I’m just not tall enough.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love playing sports. When people hear that I play baseball and flag football- they are shocked. Especially because I am girl playing the sports that are usually for “boys.” I just love playing these sports. I work hard and practice a lot so I can get better at the game. I go to many football camps for girls, and some are co-ed. I also go to Grove Prospects to work on baseball skills.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite baseball memory is my first inside-the-park home run. I was so happy, and so was my team! My favorite flag football memory is probably from my first game, my first touchdown. I felt so proud.
