Today we’d like to introduce you to Gonzalo Meza.
Gonzalo, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Flower Animals really came together when I met the bass player David Choate in a music class at Mesa College in 2014. I showed him the kind of music I was writing and recording at the time and he jumped on board. We went through many drummers before we could find the perfect fit and sometimes we would perform as a bass and guitar duo when we couldn’t find a drummer for a gig. Two years later David introduces me to Miles Clowminzer who recorded and performed on the album “ILL”.
Miles played a couple shows with us after recording the album including the album release show we had at Till Two. During that same time, I was meeting with new musicians to add to the band. First, it was Carlisle Fillat, a vocalist/keyboard/cello player who would join the band. Then it was Indigo Machado drummer/percussionist and Angus Garcia Guitar Player who would also join shortly after releasing the album in November of 2017.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We’ve had our share of struggles from dealing with unreliable musicians and getting our gear stolen. On a more personal note my mother passed away in 2014 and that was a very rough year for me as a musician. That event later fueled me to write more music while I healed. I’ve always believed that great art comes from the extreme side of emotions, whether those emotions are happy, sad or anything in between.
Whenever an obstacle may arise I like to remember one of the things that I learned from my mother and that is to make the best with what you have in front of you. I chose one of her photos as the cover for our last album “ILL” because I wouldn’t be where I am today without her.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Flower Animals – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Flower Animals wants to revitalize a new wave of live dance music. We create an environment for people to dance, let loose and express themselves. Our music has a large array of influences from Latin Jazz Fusion, Psychedelic Rock, Experimental Pop, Soul/RnB and is headed into a Cosmic Dance direction.
Our shows consist of catchy groovy songs and theatric performances which is a great mix for those looking for a night out to dance with your friends or for those who are too tired to dance but still want to be entertained.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am very excited about what Flower Animals has planned for this year and next year. This year will be a very busy year since we will be working on multiple albums and a unique merch line. We are also excited to play shows in L.A. and Tijuana this year and begin planning a tour for next year.
